arni
I am going to start something a little different,a jet powered truck! Using either of these.. Or this,I have about 15 rigs to choose from depending on spec/wheelbase! Using an engine from a Harrier,it will be a slow build so dont hold your breath - comments and tips are more than welcome.
Billydick
Going to be different. Looking forward to this build ! BillyD
depressed lemur
A vertical take off Scania. You, Sir, are either a genius or a candidate for the comfy room with soft walls. This I will be watching.
Pete in Lincs
Interesting idea, though I know it's been done in real life. Will you modify the engine to have an exhaust at the rear? Or you could just keep the two rear thrust nozzles. That would be different. As for the truck, I'd go for long wheelbase, maybe the twin rear axle for stability. Would the Mercedes cab fit onto the International chassis? That would give you maximum chassis length for the engine and may be easiest to modify for the engine intake? Good luck.

I will play it by ear (as usual!) so will see what happens, but the twin rear is a thought.Question, has anyone ever tried Demeling the soft tyres down into slicks, wonder if it will work? depressed lemur
The only way I could see that working would be to attach the wheel to the dremel and spin it. I would imagine it to be a bit smelly so you will need ventilation.

Pete in Lincs
I think it would just melt. Or even distort & fly off. Though I'd want lots of grip if I were driving what you propose.
Lvp
I've turned down the treads on my AM Corvette tires to get an even contact patch using a lathe. Worked very well. Will do yours if you'd like😁
arni
Thanks gents. Got the basic engine assembled, there is more to add but give it time, The chassis is partly assembled too,I have decided that it is four wheeler and therefore the rear axle has been moved to the very back of the chassis.I might cut the jet down at the red line and have a single large 'exhaust port thingy- very technnical here....' Not sure on the cab yet so this is just a mock up....
shood23
Wow I saw something similar to this a few years back at a drag track. Shaun
xffw45343tg
I'm thinking that the Pegasus would suck the cab off its mountings. I seem to recall that Bristol had a design sketch for a VTOL military vehicle that used the Pegasus. Might be in my library - I'll have a rummage. It was kind of a wingless Harrier that could hop over rivers and the like. To your model - there's no practical reason to have rotating nozzles and the "elephant's bum" section just saps a bit of power. If you want to take off the back end of the unit, there is a fair bit of detail that woould be visible. There is a hexiform (is that even a word?) structure aft of the turbine that supports the bearings and cone at the back end of the engine and acts as a mounting point for the temperature sensors. If you can't find pictures out on the web (there are a few of the hot end taken through the nozzles) shout and I'll see if I can point you in the right direction. shood23
Wow I wonder if they ever tried to put it back together. Also it's amazing to see how much goes into a jet engine, I have to say I have a new appreciation for guys who design and maintain them now and with all those moving parts I'm surprised you don't see more failures more often. Shaun And they say that there are fewer moving parts.... It is a Mobius kit repopped by Revell, more on the cab later.. The engine has had it's rear vents cut away and am doing the fronts,but....my arthritis kicked in and my hand was just cramping and dammed useless.... Back to the cab,the sleeper portion had been lopped off and the front glued on - no need for engine access here.... Thinking about styling perhaps the rear axle could come forward a degree? Wheelwise I have a set of genuine alloy rims from Hiroboy, going to see if the kit wheels can be adapted to use them..
Pete in Lincs
A few thoughts if I may... The engine would need vast amounts of air. Where the cab flares out aft of the doors, cut out and fit grilles and then fair it all into the front of the engine. So you'd end up with a bi-furcated intake rather like a Hunter. Have you thought about fuel tanks for the engine? The cut down front thruster area could be modified to become the fwd engine mounts? Large metal plates connected to the chassis? Yes to moving the rear axle forward a bit. It would look better and the engine would weigh the best part of a ton so you'd be under the centre of balance.

The air to the eng, should have enough plastic from the sleeper etc to play with. 2.Fuel tanks, thinking the std fuel tank or two no need for a large fuel quantity,/4 mile strip will be her hang out! 3.Good idea on the mounts. 4. Axle, yea thinkin about the styling of her and will move the rear forwards.
arni
Dont think the air intake will be a problem according to this video.
arni
Well moved the r axle forwards and started on the rims, alloy and cutting the wheel centres out to fit.Alas some numbnuts (me...........) has mislaid the camera....So (hopefully) pics tomorrow! richellis
cool, remember seeing a jet truck at Truckfest in 199...... something. It blew an old transit over as a show stopper. Was a Ford Cargo IIR, off to google to see if I can find it! Question, what are you doing with the rest of the Harrier?
