cookiezoom
Hi everyone, Hope you all had a great Christmas and a relaxing building models on Boxing Day! I have a question though, please if anyone can help me out? I'm after some really good, not too exspensive, masking tapes for edges and around areas to mask off an area for painting reasons? I'm also after some good abrasive materials for filing down before//after priming. I already have 5mm and 10mm tamiya tape, which is fine in a straight line and i aready have https://www.wonderlandmodels.com/products/squadron-sanding-stick-value-pack/ https://www.emodels.co.uk/ultimate-thinny-sticks-multi-6-pack-020.html http://www.modeldisplayproducts.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=119_128&product_id=514 But i'm struggling to get in to those really awkward places Any advice would be greatly appreciated
bentwaters81tfw
Tamiya masking tapes for curves 2mm wide. When masking, burnish the edges well, then seal edges with either Klear (esp for transparencies) or, for demarcation on painted surfaces, seal the edges with the first colour. Any bleed with then be either clear or the first colour. Then paint as normal. Repeat as necessary.
D1fuN0
Morning Chaps and Chapettes I use Tamiya sanding sponges because they can conform to those odd and awkward shapes. To get into those hard to reach places, cut a bit off, superglue it to one of those plastic stirrer thingies and wallah Below, two pics borrowed from my Katana WIP thread Hope this helps Mad Steve
LotusArenco
For cheap masking tape you can use decorators ‘Frog tape’. It’s a fiver off Amazon for 40 meters and about an inch wide. Low tack, and very similar to Tamiya. Alternatively, if you have a Hobbycraft nearby, look out for Kamoi or Washi tape (or buy on Amazon/Ebay etc.). It’s rice paper based like Tamiya tape (and comes in all sorts of funky/festive/artyfarty colours!) For sanding sticks and sponges I sometimes make my own. Hobbycraft again, A4 sheets of ‘craft foam’ about 1/8 inch thick, 50p a sheet. Spread on a thin layer of ‘Tacky glue’ and stick on whatever grade of grit wet n dry you want to use. Leave to dry, then use a sharp blade to cut out whatever shape sanding stick/sponge you want. You can then use your homemade sanding sponges the same way as Mad Steve above. Either glue onto a stick or just grip with a pair of tweezers to get into those awkward areas. injidup
I use a ladies nail buffer from the chemist or supermarket. It has 3 different grades of abrasive (down to one that is ok for buffing paint) and is pretty cheap compared to model stuff. Spongy backing so a bit of flexibility in it.

Maximum warp
I got myself a set of micromesh sanding pads last year. A bit pricey to buy, but excellent control over the sanding process as you get 10 grits or so and you can wash and re-use them. You also get polishing compound in the box. I use them wet for sanding bodywork. For awkward spaces they are not suitable.
LaurieS
I use car lining tape Cookie to go around acute corners and for that matter for most of all masking. Green masking tape made by Finespray. For straight lines and just gentle curves. Blue made by FineLine For very acute curves. More pliable than the Green. But green is best on the straight I find it is best to buy wide such as 6mm or 10mm in tapes either the above or paper tapes Tamiya etc. They are all cut from a longe rolls and the edges are not always clean plus adhesive can fractionally ooze on the edges. Plus the edges pick up dirt. Best to use a wide tape as mentioned and cut a slice with a Morton blade. This gives a good clean edge. Both tapes need just to be pressed gently down on the edges with the finger. Rare to get any seepage. Both the above tapes release and it is rare to take paint with it on release. Best to prepare and prime plastic properly to avoid problems. Also easy to cut a template from the lining tapes for intricate work. The cut pieces do not loose there shape as paper tape tends to. Costs Green. £4:00 roll. But you only get 55meters or 180feet. Very poor value Blue £4:50 roll. Tut not so good only 33 meters or 100 feet. Finally it makes good substitute plasters for Morton cut fingers. Laurie
LaurieS
On the sanding front. Not found any sanders yet which can get into difficult spces. On average they do not fit due to the height of the sanders. On difficult parts I use very fine files of all shapes Laurie
