1/72 scale Hasegawa Martin SP-5B Marlin which I converted into an earlier 1950s P5M-2 by adding a tail turret and removing the radar above the cockpit.

Excellent job on that Marlin and the diorama. I especially like the 'stinger' in the tail! I'd love to see someone do a conventional tail early Marlin kit, but then I suppose we're due a new-mould T-tail Marlin and a new-mould P2V Neptune before then. All in the gentleman's scale, of course.

Regards,

Jason

My 1/72 scale HASEGAWA Shin-Meiwa PS-1 anti-submarine flying boat. Kit modelled with additional detailing to represent a production aircraft serving with the Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force in the 1970s and 1980s.

Do like these a lot, especially the lightnings on the airfield apron.  Like all the kit that goes with an aircraft.  Been trying to do that with my HAS in 1/48 but there are a lot less easily available accessories than in 1/72 - 1/76.  Had to build my own Bedford tanker recently as there are little to no kits out there (or under £50 or so each)

1960s RAF Lockheed Hercules

resized_f248fbc3-0eef-4d62-b2fd-0d844832

In February 1970 my dad bought me the new AIRFIX Lockheed Hercules for my Birthday. The Series 8 box was then the biggest model kit I had seen. My dad also bought me all the AIRFIX paints that were listed on the side of the box.

I spent the next two weeks building and painting this goliath at the tender age of ten years old. Unfortunately I no longer have this Hercules but I do still have the Bloodhound set that came with it..........it appears on Page 3 of this Topic.

However for those of you lucky enough to own a Hercules in 1960s RAF colour scheme below is an idea for displaying your model...........as you can see Hercules did not always operate from a large concrete apron........here at RAF Thorney Island in 1967 they are parked on a network of dispersals.

oxford diecast 1/76 scale vehicles for use in airfield dioramas

For those of us who love to model the colourful post war era aircraft and like to include civilian vehicles with our dioramas OXFORD DIECAST do a good range of cars and larger vehicles in 1/76 scale for the 1950s-1990s.

Here is the pride and joy of the airfield controller at RAF Scarborough......a 1960 Sunbeam Rapier Mk III.

When I noticed it in an earlier pic, I thought it must have been the Station Commanders...!:D

It looks a rather good shape, some of the Oxford Diecasts are mis-shapen horrors!

Cararama used to do (may still, but haven't seen them for a while) a really nice range of 1/76 cars too. Bought a pile of them in a poundshop a few years back - among others there was a Mk1 Capri, Beetle (the original one), Lotus Europa (just the thing for a dashing young Lightning pilot!) & classic Mini.

The engine radiators and cylinders are made from lead. ..........I think it might be leaking oil too................................

Call it RAF Boxted & you could have both He111 and a British (if USAF) airfield.  I grew up in Colchester & never knew much about the airfield I used to drive round to go to work.

That Battle of Britain airfield watch office is the same type seen at many early constructed airfield and of which I built an exact copy of the type seen at Bircham Newton  . . .

Great sense of reason at both airfield locations . . . .

So many nice 1/76 vehicles.  Just need some in the 1/50 Corgi range for us 1/48 modelers.  They make the difference between a displayed model and a diorama.  And the assorted 'stuff' around the place, maybe a few people.

Well Ian you are definately a man of similar interests to me........not only are your control towers superb accurate replicas but so are the settings you mount them on......the network of concrete roads and building bases are accurate and to scale too.....your dioramas give a sense of the large openess of an airfield.

Keep sharing matey

Adrian

Clever use of large scale models at the front and smaller scale at the rear give an impression of depth or distance to the diorama.

Before diving in to 1/48 I did consider building a 1/72 hangar and apron.  Trouble is I sized up the hangars at Wattisham for a scale build & ended up thinking a 1/48 HAS would be smaller.  I see a few shortened hangars in some of these scenes - no criticism, it just a practical option.  I have been watching mancunian airman's T2 with interest, but these scenes add the wow factor

From a practical point of view just one end of a hangar in 1/72 scale is probably enough for an apron diorama. If you have let us say a 1/72 Argosy just inside or in front of the C1 hangar doors, what would you fill the rest of a full length hangar with..........?  I don't want to build another Argosy...........too many models and not enough time..........help..........I wonder if my wife has ever considered scale modelling................

cheers, Adrian
