What is the best way to make a sea diorama these days?

I think my wife has bought me the new tool Tamiya Yamato for Christmas. If she has, I would like to build the model and set it in a sea diorama.

 

The last time I did a sea diorama was almost 25 years ago, and back then, I used exterior and interior polyfiller, and sculpted the sea before it set.

 

Is there now a better (less messy) way of doing this now?
