1/350 HMS Dreadnought

Found time for a bit of modelling finally, so on with Dreadnought;

Signal lines rigged with Uschi fine, earlier than usual in the build, but I don't want to fit the boats until this was done as access to the tie down points would be very tight with the launches in place!

And then the launches can go on;

Fitted the falls from the WEM site to the whale boats and cutters;

And fitted the whale boats, should have installed them before the launches :think:

Added stretched sprue as the con rods that run from the emergency telegraphs above admirals cabin to the foremast ;

Then painted up some 0.8mm brass rod and punched out 1mm discs of 0.5mm plasticard. This is for the booms either side of the bridge, presumably for launching the cutters, that are completely missing from the kit but very evident on the drawings. I'm planning to have a go at making the pulleys and lines that support the booms later, and if it goes wrong I'll just rig em with Uschi line!

Booms fitted;

And the davits with etched brass strip pre installed to secure the boats - with hindsight I should have used tin foil as the brass was quite difficult to wrap around the boats in situ;

And fitted the cutters, along with the WEM boarding ladders and ropes;

Thanks for looking,

Cheers

Simply stunning Nick.

Just one question - how do you attach the halyards to the deck? With mine, I used some etch loops from an old sheet on one kit, and some cut down railing on another, but neither looked great to me, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Ray, and thanks for the comment - Same idea as yours, I used left over 'half railings' from the WEM Repulse set to give something to fix to, there's something very similar on the Illustrious set as well. Fixed in place what seems like ages ago!!

Rigging looks excellent. I can't get my head round how do you mount it to he masts. It's look as like kind of blocks there.

Cheers Kris - the 'blocks' on the yards are part of the WEM PE yards with foot ropes, the lines are attached to the yards as close as I could get and trimmed them. They look like they're attached to the blocks.

Hello Nick, thanks for those bits of information, looks like I was on the right track after all!

This is looking fabulous!

The quality of some of the builds on this forum is extraordinary, and this is amongst the best.

And thanks Rob, you really are way to kind!!

Couple of bits done this week;

Tried to make the pulley blocks for the boat booms;

37657586581_78e1ec1cc5_h.jpg

4 lines to each attached to the 1mm discs, turned out ok, but they're a bit twisty and took ages. Probably wouldn't do it this way again, maybe very fine wire next time for rigidity - you live and learn;

But it let me finish rigging the boats booms;

And pre-rigged the main mast ready to install;

Cheers

Looking good.  I wonder if pulley blocks could be made available by a company specialising in 3D printer products?

Maybe, not sure if the printing resolution'd be good to make it worthwhile?

On a related note, I've had my first go at 3D printing design for the dockyard cranes - I'll post some pics when I get chance and if Shapeways can make my design work!!

Bit more progress, she's coming together now!

Foremast rigged, Uschi line standard;

Main mast added along with aft 2 turrets;

A bit more rigging on the main mast where it attaches to the deck. The last bit which connects to one of the torpedo net booms will be fitted after the net shelf and handrails.

37129397234_10aeb271d2_z.jpg

And the foredeck rails fitted along with post to support the wire that runs from the conning tower tower to the forward flag pole. There's a similar one, but thinner, on the aft most turret that serves the same purpose but you can't really see it in the pic posted. Unfortunately the WEM rails don't have a gap for the top of the ladders so they've been cut to create a gap, I'll fix a bit of wire each side next weekend then the turret can go on;

Thanks for looking

Cheers
