Nick C
Time to start a new project; 1/350 HMS Dreadnought with White Ensign & Eduard PE and some resin detail from North Star; and Master barrels; Replacement resin guns from North star; And 24" searchlight for the fore mast, the kit provides a 36" which is incorrect; Made a start, first bit is to correct the port holes and hatches on the port bow area; Add these 2 port holes; Remove this hatch and add another pothole below the hatch on the upper deck; And add a new hatch in the correct position - hopefully a more accurate depiction of the real thing; Name on the stern from the WEM PE before joining the hull halves. There are photos of the ship with the name originally below the upper line of port holes captioned as 1905 and later,1908 above, I'm not sure when the name was moved but went for above the port holes; 1905 1908 Thanks for looking Cheers Nick

Ray S
Looking forward to your progress on this one. Nice to see the searchlights are available, I had to raid one from my spare kit as the Zvezda version did not have a light for the fore mast at all, along with a few more bits and pieces. All the best, Ray

Big Mac
Hi there, First post on here. I'm building the Trumpeter 1915 Dreadnought. It's the first model I've tackled in years and m finding it tricky. One question I have is with regard to the gold Photo etched markings. They are incredibly fiddly and difficult to remove from the frame, but more importantly are you supposed to paint them or simply glue them in place and leave them the gold colour. The instructions aren't clear on this point. Any help would be much appreciated.. Thanks
Thom216
Hi and welcome to the board! For applying PE, it's up to you really, how you feel about doing it. The fiddly-ish of PE makes it hard to paint after application, especially if you're trying to mask around it. Painting the PE after being glued on is best done with a determined build-sequence, applying from the superstructure out to the edge of the deck and from the deck up, and keeping the build in as many subassemblies as possible while your painting before bringing it all together at the end. Or you can paint them while still on the metal fret. In many ways this is easier. Paint it and let dry. Then remove and apply. Some paint chipping will occur, but you can touch that up easily after the glue has dried and the part is in place. Lightly sanding the part before removing it from the fret and before painting will help the paint to adhere, especially if you use a primer coat. As for not painting them, there are some images that show unpainted PE on a model, but these are (mostly) just a manufacturer's way of showing how their PE looks on the model. And to remove PE from a fret, use a sharp hobby knife with the PE fret against a hard surface, like a square of tile or glass and kind-of wiggle the blade against the tiny connector between the PE part and the fret. You're exerting quite a bit of force against easily bendable medal, and the less warping the better before you get the first intended bend it. Also, try not to pull on the knife with a sawing motion either, as this can also bend the PE out of shape. And watch out for the Ping Factor! That's where the tiny PE part pings off into the aether, or down to the carpet monster, after it comes loose from the fret. A way to contain this is to cut the part while it is still in its plastic wrap. Just cut straight through the plastic and if the tiny piece tries to fling off to the Otherworld it'll be contained inside the packaging. Or place masking tape on the backside of the fret so the piece has something to stick to rather that flying off to the Underverse. Then you have to glue it down. Most people use CA (superglue.) Thin, slow drying CA is best, especially if you have to fiddle with it. If you have fast-acting CA then try and pre-position the part as best as possible before applying, cause many times one shot is all you get. What I do sometimes is to make sure the part is where I want it and then tape the PE part down from one side so you can still lift it away, apply the CA and then press it down. There are also fast-drying activators you can buy, that when applied to CA will harden it immediately. Another option is using Flat Clear, like one would use to overcoat a painted model and decals. Just treat it like brush-on glue and it will adhere the part down, though the bond is not as strong and of course you have to wait for it to dry. Most of all, have patience with it. No model should be built in a rush. Good luck! Edited December 24, 2016 by Thom216
Big Mac
Hi Thom216, Many thanks for your detailed reply it will be a big help. I'm keen to make the model look as good as I can so will take it slowly. Another question I have is about paints. i've bought paints according to the Trumpeter colour chart but i'm having trouble with a couple of things. Firstly, when i go to give some parts a second coat the paint on the first layer seems to come away when i brush over the second coat. It looks flaky and really bad but i don't know what I'm doing wrong. It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does its really annoying and looks awful. Secindly, I can't seem to locate the colour for parts of the upper decking and above the main armament. On the colour chart it is referred to as SC 06 or Mr Hobby H 06. No one seems to stock it and I cannot locate it online. I wonder if you have any ideas where i might be able to locate some please. many thanks

There are a couple of threads on here (a Japanese WW2 battleship and aircraft carrier spring to mind) where somebody has left the PE in the brass colour to show the extent of the detailing and they look absolutely great!! My preference is for a realistic finish so I always paint the PE, mostly after fitting onto the kit plastic to make up convenient sub-assemblies where possible as it makes handling and painting much easier (see the ladders in the pic below). The one exception is hand rails which I always spray on the fret, attached to the painted model and touch up any chips - that way you get a clean delineation between handrail and deck. As for paints - I spray with Tamiya acrylics, for wooden decks I use XF55 deck tan or XF78 wooden deck tan (I'm planning on trying a wooden deck for the first time on dreadnought). For the other deck areas I'm going to use XF79, linoleum deck brown. Hope this helps. Few pics below of a little bit more progress; Added the strips to sides of the hull out of 0.25x0.5mm evergreen strip which evident in photos and drawings but missing from the kit And fitted the shafts and rudders along with a hole to represent the stern underwater torpedo tube which is missing from the kit Removed the moulded on ladders from the main deck to the foredeck and replaced them and the kit PE ladder further aft with the Eduard parts Thanks for looking and Happy Christmas!! Nick C
Thanks all for the comments and Happy New Year!! Not much to report over Christmas other than starting to organise all the small parts for painting, tedious but I find it the most methodical way; And added PE stairs to make painting easier; Main deck attached and hatch covers from the WEM set attached where the wooden deck will fit over them; And the rest laid out in the correct orientation for painting so I can remember where they go, there's also a ladder hatch with plasticard coaming to go forward of X turret which is missing from the kit and some skylights that'll be shown open; Same for the foredeck; Replaced the moulded ladders on the insides of the funnels although I'm not sure how visible they'll be; Assembled the forward funnel cap - vey fiddly and I'm not entirely happy with the result but hopefully should look ok painted; Cheers Nick Edited July 22, 2017 by Nick Charnock Flickr pics

Already have the kit and Porntos PE. HI Clogged, good luck with the build, what's the Pontos PE like, I've never tried theirs? Update from last weekend; Torpedo net booms are fitted (both sides); And the small ladder and missing boom added to both sides; Hawespipe covers made from scrap Illustrious safety nets; Main mast steps and access ladders added Attachment points added for the upper and lower signal lines (halyards??) And the aft funnel cap from the Trumpeter PE and main engine vents added from the WEM set - the funnel caps are a nightmare!! Nick C
Bit more progress, still very much at the sub assemblies and little details stage, hopefully get some paint on and larger sub assemblies together soon; Funnels assembled with the stays from the Eduard set and the platform from WEM. I lost the aft pipe from the large funnel (still not sure how)so had to scratch build a replacement from brass rod and plasticard Compass platform from Eduard and mid-ships and forward steps to access the turret tops and radio screen from WEM; Bridge base assembly Gun ports fitted to make painting easier And my first try at soldering a brass mast - quite please with how it's worked out but it needs a bit of clean up. Nick C
Finally got a bit more done, what with work getting in the way!! Got the masts pretty much finished; I corrected he position of the main mast ladder from the search light platform to the control position from my earlier effort which went up the mast itself. A watch out for anyone building this kit with the WEM PE is that the plastic yards supplied as part of the mast are far too short. I used the kit mast as a template for the replacement brass yards, which are also therefore too short so the PE yards with footropes overhang. The WEM yards are correct when compared with 'anatomy of the ship' and they don't look too bad so I'm going to leave them and put it down to experience. After I'd added them I decided I wasn't happy with the plasticard struts on the foremast; So I drilled locating holes in the masts and replaced them with 0.5mm brass rod. Only one end's glued to give a bit of flexibility when installing; Turrets next, decided to use the WEM platforms and ladders rather than the Eduard which look a bit clumsy; Then I made a jig using the spare turret and kit guns to get the Master guns aligned; Worked fairly well, guns with outer siting hoods attached ready for painting; Bit more soldering practice on the admirals cabin and chart house; And a bit of dry fitting to see how she's coming together (helps with my motivation when I can see some progress); Thanks for looking Cheers Nick
