Tomahawk in the Desert! 1/48 P-40B

Recommended Posts

Honestly, this kit was a big disappointment. Not on par with the latest Airfix releases. The detail was sit or lacking, panel lines were inconsistent in depth, width, or non present altogether. The plastic is funky and like marshmallow in places. Fit was fiddly in the nose and the panels on top. I managed to make it look decent. The Hasegawa P-40s are still better.

... a great result nonetheless. Really like your restrained weathering on this one Habu, and the overall dusty, deserty look. Very interested to hear your take on this kit as well, I always assume that all Airfix releases from now on are going to be stellar- your points indicate there's still a bit of a random factor in play. Anyway.. great build!

You've made a good job of it, but it does go to show have different folks can have the same experience with the same kit.  The only bit I've encountered was the nose alignment of the gun panels.  Getting those aligned was tricky, but fixing any misalignment afterwards wasn't too hard.  How did you find the gear legs?  I found those to be rather "relaxed" in terms of location and fit, and I'm not looking forward to fitting them permanently (I'm mid-build).  I've got a couple of other P-40s knocking about, but I've not built any yet, so I can't compare. :)

Well for a 'big disappointment' you've made a bl**dy good job of it. Superb paint job and weathering. Is it me, or does that prop and spinner assembly need a slightly tighter fit (or is that one of the fit issues you've run up against)?

That's exactly one of the fit issues. The Spitfire Mk.XIX had a similar setup, but it fit just fine. That's why I was so disappointed. They used tried and true design in places, but they don't work as well on this kit. I dunno why.

Tough build ! poor kit ?!!!!!!

Nice job !

Long may Airfix continue then to release such poor kits is all i can say :D

Well, hopefully Airfix listens and they don't repeat it. I'm sorry, but the whole "bespoke U.K." thing didn't work this time. The B-17 kit was MUCH better fitting. And that was tooled in India like so many releases before. That's the way to go.
