True, it was standard on the later models, the earlier ones had much cleaner lines.

I remember these in early '80's in black or orange.  Always wanted one in orange as I always had a soft spot for little hot hatches.  (Had a Ford Escort Mexico MkI, orange with black vinyl roof, at the time.  It was just a sporty car that felt a bit old compared to the Golfs and MG Metros....oh how I weep now!)

I never had one either, my best friend was a huge fan, he had loads, I was into Opel Mantas myself, had 4 of them. Spent a lot of time tuning his Fiats though, led me to owning a few Alfa 156's!

I test drove a MK1 Opel Manta at a garage in Kingsbridge - curvy lovely car, 1.9 (I think) - white with a matt black bonnet..  Too thirsty - hence the Escort :o)

Mine was a Manta B, 2 litre but running a 2.2 head, Kent 214 cam, twin Weber 45's, 2" Powerflow exhaust...I think I was getting about 140-150 bhp.

That brought back some memories. I lived in Sanderstead and went to school in Old Coulsdon!

In the documentary Houston we have a problem there's a great bit about the development of the Yugo car. Basically Yugoslavia was in huge debt at the time to the US ( you have to watch the documentary to find out why, you wouldn't believe me if I wrote it here )

Anyway, the US approached Yugoslavia with the idea that if they built a luxury car for the US market it might go someway to paying this debt off, so Yugoslavia ( having absolutely no clue about the US car market or even car manufacturing in general ) got together their finest design and engineering minds and came up with what they envisioned as the ultimate luxury automobile.... The Yugo!

Now obviously what the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia thought was a luxury car and what the USA car buying public thought was a luxury car were on opposite sides of the universe.

And it flopped... badly!

No surprise there really.

AFAIR the Zasatava car and Tomas moped were built in Jugoslavia under special licence from the Italian parent companies as part of war reparations to the Jugoslavs for the Italian invasion and devastation done to the country during WW2

Similarily the German gov were still providing special help to certain industries
