Head On Attack

As those who have followed some of my builds will know, I`m not adverse to trying out something a little bit different in trying to capture a moment in time of an event. I hope to have this ready for display at Cockpit fest 2017.

This project is something I have always wanted to do, so lets introduce the kits....,

So earlier this year I had a little play around with them and worked out how they may be posed at the finish....,

(SWMBO wasn`t that impressed with this....) :P

So last night, galvanized by the success of the Hercules air drop dio, I made a start on the 109....,

More soon.

I've had a go at head-on attacks on bombers in IL-2,it's scary, the closing speeds are terrific and you have to be spot on with your aim

then break hard to avoid collision.

This should be good tc,and yes,the Herk/Landy dio came out a treat.

Thanks for the comments and now for an update....., ish!

A few small things done today as I was stuck in the office for most of it working on an upcoming work project.

I managed to drill the hole for the supporting rod so it now looks like this,

One thing I found out about this Academy kit is it`s inability to be posed in an in-flight pose without a fair bit of work. I had painted the wheels and when it came to pop them in the wheel wells, the u/c door was nowhere near flush with the undersides of the wings.

A fair bit of sanding later.....,

...... and I eventually got everything fitted as reasonably well as possible. (Although those gaps will need to be filled).

Moving on to one of the B-17`s to scope out a plan of action and it`s fair to say that detail of any kind is not it`s strong point. Admittedly it`s good enough for my needs with the focus being on capturing the feel of an attack rather than rivet counting, but I accept that I`m going to have to scratch build some areas to make it more appealing. A floor for the waist gunners being a prime example. I was going to cut the bomb bay doors open and have bombs dropping out. But then I seem to remember that fighters hardly ever attacked during the bomb runs and left it to the flak to deter the bombers? (I could be wrong?)

I`m also glad I stock piled a number of figures as these are going to be important in making the B-17`s look `busy` and I have to remember to make subtle differences in both B-17`s so as to make sure they look different.

This is going to be fun.

Cheers chaps for the comments. I have no come up with a bomb group and to be honest, I`m kinda edging towards a fictional one.

Much to SWMBO horror, her lovely dining room table has been turned into a strange type of B-17 sweat shop.

Due to the size of the kits it`s slow going.

But the Me 109 has been given a base coat and the engines and u/c are near complete.

I`ve trimmed all the u/c legs other than one which I intend to model as shot away with the engine damaged and smoking and with the wheel slightly dropping away.

More soon.

What are you using for the clear rod supporting the me109?

Here you go.

Using the solid rod for my builds, but smaller, lighter models would get away with the tubes.

Just need to add a couple more details like the pitot tube and then give it a battle worn weathered look and it`s done.

Great idea tc!

I'll be keeping an eye on your build for tips & any pitfalls I need to look out for as I'm planning on doing something similar.........the event I've chosen is when Franz Stigler in his Bf109g escorted to safety the badly damaged B17F of Charles "Charlie" Brown.......quite a story!!

Started playing around with how I want to pose the nearest B-17 and I have opted for a damaged engine which will be shortly holed and smoke coming from it.

With that in mind I felt I needed to feather the props as per what the aircrew would of done. A little `twist` later and i have the effect I need. Going to add a little hydraulic failure as well with the u/c starting to let down.

Thanks chaps. :)

Have had to put this one on hold for a month or so due to work and a couple of priority builds for an event.

Hopefully I`ll restart mid February if not before.

Did manage to drill in some holes of various caliber to simulate combat damage.
