skyking_comms
Hi, I have a number of large models, such as a 1/48 B-1B, 1/72 B-52 and 1/72 RC-135. All are built but now I'm looking to put them in display cases. I don't want to spend the hundreds of pounds charged by the companies that specialise in making cases for events. Wondering if there are any other solutions? Ideally just looking for a Perspex case with a nice wooden stand. I know the sheets of Perspex are cheap, but I wouldn't trust myself to do a good job of sealing the pieces together (Someone mentioned fish tank glue / sealant) Hours of work was put into making these models and now I want to protect them and show them off :-) I live in Evesham and would appreciate any assistance! Thanks, Darrenhttp://www.raf-fairford.co.uk Edited December 4, 2016 by skyking_comms
Black Knight
An Idea; a friend did this for his 1/35th AFVs - he went looking in auction places till he found a suitable old shop glass counter or display unit [can't remember which it was] He picked it up cheap as other buyers wanted the fancy wood furniture type for ornaments. skyking_comms
Thanks Black Knight - Funny you should mention that as I started looking at display units that shops are currently using. None of them would sell them to me, but it soon became apparent that the sizes didn't quite match what I wanted and they were scratched. So I decided it would be much easier to build from scratch to the actual sizes I needed. I also have about 5 of these large models, so would never find ready built cases to fit all of them. I'm sure most of the bits can be purchased from B&Q and someone else mentioned Dicloromethane to join the sheets. My effort would also be very poor, so more than happy to let someone else take on the challenge for me :-) Darren
RobertF
I usually make my display cases with 3mm glass panes (which are cut to the correct size by the glass shop) held together with the type of glue you use for gluing car mirrors to windscreens etc. This glue hardens when exposed to UV light (i.e. sunlight). Very sturdy in itself, but if you want to be extra sure (or just like the look of a display case with a frame) you can fit the panes in aluminium U-profiles or L-profiles. krow113
If you search this forum for this subject , I remember outlining the procedure for making plexi case;s , the materials , the tools , and the skills required. Just buy one ; or pay someone who has put in the time learning the multiple skills required and owns the tools required to fabricate a custom case.
