Wessex HU 5 question.......

G'day All,

 

Can someone please tell me what this scabbed on bit, just below the corner window, was on RN Wessex HU5's?? ECM of some sort?

I seem to remember it was an ice warning aerial which was add later to the Wessex the Sea King has them on the port side under the cockpit window .

Grizzly is spot on, a crude but effective way of seeing if ice was forming on your blades or engine intake. A small light allowed it to be seen at night.

 

Iceocreation probe. The Sea King and Wessex had one, the Sea King one caught many an engineer out, just the right height for a head injury. The RN Lynx had two on the Starboard side under the Pilots door.

If it's like the ice warning vane fitted to the Dominie, then the pilot had the ability to heat the vane to remove the ice such that the rate of ice accretion might be measured.

Thanks for the response's. I put another image up in the original post, so hopefully it shows up.

 

 So it's a high tech steel rod with a light pointed at it to detect icing at night........(I figure the stick holders would be able to see the ice during the day..??)
