Ongoing DDoS Attack causing Forum Slowness   26/04/17

In case you have missed the announcement, the reason that the forum has been slow at times since the minor version update the other day is due to a Denial of Service attack, brute force attack on our email, and judging by the lag with our FTP response, that too.  If you're feeling like you're experiencing a glitch in the Matrix, you're not wrong.  This is the same MO as the attack in September 2016 that occurred when we transitioned to the new version 4 of the software.  We're currently working with US and UK cyber-crime departments, who specialise in this sort of thing, and we're hopeful that we'll be able to track them down this time by using the accumulated evidence already held.    We are pretty certain that it's a continuation of the same attack last year, only at a reduced intensity to deter people from using the site "because it's terribly slow", rather than taking it down completely, and we're also sure of the motivations of those responsible.  Spite.   Please bear with us in the interim, and wish us luck in dealing with these.... "people".

Airliners.net and copyright

8 posts in this topic

Gents and Ladies,

This was posted in the Airliners area but we have noticed it is spreading over the whole site now regarding copyrighted photographs. Airliners.net have not allowed direct linking to their images for a while now and have been known to legally pursue those sites which do link to their images.

How does it affect you on Britmodeller? Quite simply, post a raw photo from Airliners.net and it will be removed.

If you continue to post them you will attract a warning and a suspension followed by removal from the site reserved for the very hard of understanding. If you decide to edit out the Airliners.net tagging along the bottom, and we find it (we do check) then it will be an automatic ban.

Airliners.net have a lot of money, they are subscription based to use their forum, they also sell the photographs for stock images and rely on links to their website to generate traffic for further sponsorship and advertising revenue. Therefore they can afford to chase down websites and individuals who do not follow this simple requirement and we are not willing to put BM at risk over this.

This also applies to any other sites who share the same policy. Therefore please think before you post any picture that has not been taken by you.

Regards

The Britmodeller Moderating Team.

Its as easy, maybe even easier, to post the link than a copyrighted image.

If in doubt; do it the safer way.

Here is the legal requirement from Airliners.net: LINK

Hello Julien, thank you for the useful heads-up. And Black Knight as well.

I just clicked on your link and got a 404 not found error - a transient?

Cheers,

Alex.

This is how I understand it:

Don't: Upload other peoples work to Photobucket, Flickr or other hosting services, and then post it here.

Do: if you don't own an image provide a link.

This may be aimed at me after I posted a picture of a Surya Kiran, Kiran on another thread for reference purposes only.

I clicked on the picture in question,  then clicked again on 'copy image address' thinking that only the linked address would appear, however it seems that since the BM site has been updated it now opens up the address therefore displaying the image in all it's glory.

Not aimed at you, it is happening more and more. If you post the link in there should be a dialog box which pops up and gives you the option to post as a link.

That's always been the way, even back as far as V.2.2!

Don't click on the photo; copy the address line as the link.

This is the way :)
