corsaircorp
Hello dears, Sorry, t'was too late to carry on yesterday. Mumble mumble... I checked, and yes, it is quite right, 3,9mm, should I know it a little bit before... See, So whatever, the nose is too deep, It must get a weight watchers course. Without changing the backing plate of the spinner. The wing is right now and the main wheels will be 1mm further forward. That will give a more steeper appearance. I will check the shape of the spinner and compare it with the différents ones I get. I will buy another Seafire 17 and start her asap, but I'll make her from the box (except for the prop blades) and then compare the 2 of her. Just seeing if that surgery is well Worth the job bone. You know what...?? I'm pretty nosy. Have a very nice day. Corsaircorp
corsaircorp
Hello Dears, I told myself, No Spit or Seafire for this modelling evening but, I worked on my Eduard Mk IX. See you later, Sincerely. Corsaircorp
corsaircorp
Hello Col, Don't you worry, I keep carryin' on at a slower pace. Here's the nose section compared to the PR XIX nose. The measures on the Florennes Mk XIV will help to understand what is wrong and where ?? I know Mk XII, Seafire XV and 17 are different breed in lenght. Whatever, they represent a cowling that is like a Merlin engined Spitfire on the Seafire 17. What is worrying me is that my seafire 17 will be metallised, all these cuts and putty and sanding must disappear completely, metal finish has no forgiveness Sincerely Corsaircorp
Troy Smith
Hi CC the AirfixPR XIX has a slightly too small nose ring. For clarity I won't use roman numbers. the front end of both single stage Griffon (Spit 12, Seafire 15, 17) and two stage Griffon (Spit 14, 18, 19,21, 22, 24, Seafire 45, 46,47) is the same same rocker bulges, nose ring, exhaust position. The difference is at the rear of engine. So the measurements you made of the Spitfire 14 are relevant to the Seafire 17 up to the rear of the main cylinder block. this if for the Airfix Spit 12, but the nose and problems are the same on the Seafire 17. the fuselage is too deep, and the rocker covers and exhaust are too low. after more research, the nose is the right length, so the white extension below is wrong, but the moved up rocker covers and exhaust, and the long thin triangle removed (base of triangle is 1mm) and the lower line of the colwing is then bent up, this correct the front depth problem, the rear fuselage needs some plastic card adding inside and then about 1 mm scraped off, as seen below the big problems. Quote The nose is also too deep, but the rocker covers and exhaust are too low, if you look carefully at the above pictures all these details can be made out. One other complaint was the slope of the nose, this is fine, but it looks wrong as the rocker covers are too low. http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/74743-1-48-spitfire-fuselage-comparisons/page-2#entry827000 Being thrifty I try to salvage kits, ideally correcting faults without too much mess. Here's the Airfix XII modified, over the Cooke plans and the Aeroclub XII. Not a very good photo but I was trying to get all this in on shot, so the modified Airfix is at an angle to show rear fuse thinning This all held togther with gaffa tape and blutack, apart from the nose splice. A cut in the lower panel reduces depth, and makes the nose slimmer. After much head scratching, i realised that the side panel is not deep enough, and so the rocker covers are too low. The red line is the new panel line. Note previous mounting hole, the line of plastic underneath needs removing and building up below exhausts. The Airfix XII has been reduced in depth at the rear fuselage, I have shaded orange the other side, to show how much was removed. A little more maybe needs to come off. Note the ICM Rudder, and the fin has been shortened and reprofiled. The Airfix rudder could be reprofiled, but given an easy use of an alternate part, why make work for your self. The kit rudder could be used to make a XIV rudder possibly. Now the fun, the nose is too short, which makes it too deep, I have added 2mm. (this does not need doing, length is OK) One subtle point, the Griffon sloped down more than a Merlin, 2 degrees IIRC, look at the datum line on the drawing and the exhaust slope down. The single stage nose looks to be the same as the two stage griffon, which is longer due to the extra stage. The Airfix Spit 12 and seafire 17 spinners are good as far as i know. HTH, I'll PM you later. cheers T
corsaircorp
Hello Dears, Guess xher I'm going with this nose. Ready to cut a 1mm triangle and make the nose thinner. This seem right with my Florennes measures. The plasticard on the back will compensate the saw's width, Nothing more. Then I'll work on the exhaust lines, going up of 1mm too. And then possibly takin' a print of the rectified nose, any interested ? The scratches on the background tell it all To be continued. Thank for watching. Corsaircorp Sorry , first I mean Guess where I'm going.
corsaircorp
Some news from the Seafire, The nose is going well, the 1mm triangle has been cut. Now, it is cementing Under pressure, then, I still have to work out the exhaust. I spent a lot of time on the intrados, far more difficult to modify. See, I wish you both a very nice day. I keep carryin'on. The P-47N is now closed, the Mustang Mk Ia has her wing now and some other things here and there. Thank for watching. Sincerely. corsaircorp
Hello dears, Pretty good news late friday, my friend has found a Seafire 17 at a good price in a convention. Will make these 2 together, one OOB and this one, You will see and decide for yourself if surgery is a necessity. To be continued, thank for watching. Sincerely. corsaircorp
Hello Dears, My wife did'nt understand, 2 kits of the same Aircraft, luckily, she never paid a look in my stock... Cutting the undersides of the wing is not easy at all, 'cause I preserve the Wheel well. Extrados are OK, just some sanding, I think that the second Seafire will be finished before this one But I will try to follow the same pace for these 2 ladies. Thank for watching. Sincerely. corsaircorp
Hello Dears, I'm glad, it's going well, the modified wing seem good, I feared because everything must rightly on the same spot but 1mm further aft and ta daaaaa let's carry on Have a nice day, to be continued next week. Wlad
On 12/18/2016 at 16:11, Wlad said: Hello Corsaircorp, I've jumped in a little late on the propeller width conversation. I've visited the Military Museums in Calgary and they have a Seafire XV there. I measured the propeller width and for the life of me I cannot find the paper with the measurements. I did use the measurement to fix the propeller blades on the Special Hobby kit as they are too wide. My blades ended up being 5.75 mm at the root, which is their widest point. The Airfix blades for the Seafire XVII are 4.8 mm at the root and 5.25 mm at their widest point, making them too narrow and not the correct shape. You can see my correction at ARC http://www.arcair.com/Gal14/13601-13700/gal13629-Seafire-Franco-Valias/00.shtm, though the angle of the picture makes the corrected blade appear too narrow. A look at the finished model gives a better impression and looks more like the reference pictures posted earlier here. Cheers, Wlad Hi Corsaircorp, I found the piece of paper I was looking for, in the most unlikely of places of course. Here's what I measured on the Seafire XV propeller: Length (edge of spinner to tip) 1260 mm, max width (at base of spinner) 260 mm. I strongly suspect the Seafire XVII has the same propeller. So, it looks like both Airfix and Special Hobby got the length right. Airfix's is too narrow, Special Hobby's is too wide. Cheers, Wlad 2
corsaircorp
AAAAll right Wlad ! Thank you very much, this is a confirmation, On the Mk XIV at Florennes, the measures are the same Lenght: 1255mm Width at the base 260mm Widthest at the first third 270mm. Seemingly both Griffon engined to the Mk XIX has the seem propeller blades. Did you saw the thread about trhe Florennes Spitfire ? Thank you, it's appreciated, together we go to a comprehensive plans for any Spitfire Hope that Mr & Mrs Airfixotamitrumpyboss will read this before commiting a brand new Spitfire Mk XIV Sincerely. airbus320
Very interesting, I’ve built the Spitfire XII using the Airfix nose with the Hasegawa fuselage, it was amazing how deep the Airfix fuselage was in comparison to the Hasegawa! For the Seafire XVII I’ve taken the easy route and bought the Aeroclub fuselage. Keep up the good work! Chris
