Gentlemen,

I'm interested to find out the date when the three G.A.T.A.C. (Groupements Aériens Tactiques) groups were first formed. I always thought that Général André Hartemann was the creator of these formations, which would be about 1951(?), however, some websites list dates as early as 1947!

Also a list of commanders and service dates would be very helpful.

Thank you in advance of any help you may provide,

Best Regards,

P.N.

Hi, P.N.

My understanding about three GATACs is more or less the same as yours, although I believe they had been created in 1950. However, according to the article Galsky kohout nad Indocinou (2) by Josef Novotny, published in PKR magazine no. 21 in 1994, Groupemment Tactique Nord for Tonkin and Groupemment Tactique Sud for Cochinchina had been formed in 1947. Unfortunately, my knowledge of Czech language is absolutely basic so there is very little I can add to this information. Still, it seems that especially the former one had been hardly any better than the usual collection of anything with wings French could lay their hands on scrapped together. Not much, but I hope it helps. Cheers
