Popular Post Navy Bird
Hi mates, More resin! This time it's the Blackburn Buccaneer S.Mk.1 in the only scale that matters. The new kit from Scale Resin (CMR Moulding & Casting) is beautifully detailed, even more so than the S.2B kit from CMR that I built a few years ago. These multi-media kits include pretty much everything you need - there is little, if any, need for aftermarket accessories. I chose to model the Buccaneer as one of the aircraft performing carrier deck trials aboard HMS Ark Royal in 1963. That meant an overall anti-flash white scheme, and let me tell you that white is my least favourite colour to paint. Here is my executive summary: Project: Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm Blackburn Buccaneer S.Mk.1 Kits: Scale Resin (CMR) Blackburn Buccaneer S.Mk.1 (kit number A7201)Scale: 1:72 (Her Majesty's Own Scale)Decals: From the kit, representing XN934, No. 801 Squadron, Carrier Deck Trials HMS Ark Royal, March 1963Photoetch: Included with the kit, primarily for the cockpit, ejection seat details, antennae, windscreen wiper, wing fold details, wing hinge covers, windscreen demister, canopy support, some structural members, radar details, etc. Vacuform: Only one canopy included with the kit, unlike previous CMR kits. The canopy is supplied as one piece, and must be cut into two sections to be displayed open - luckily I managed to do this without ruining the vacuform!Paint: Testors 2143 RLM21 Semi-gloss White, 1180 Flat Steel; Gunze H335 Medium Sea Grey (standing in for Dark Admiralty Grey who was on assignment), H417 RLM76 (in place of Light Admiralty Grey due to illness), H38 Steel Red, H11 Flat White, H12 Flat Black, H77 Tyre Black, H25 Sky Blue, H318 Radome Tan, H309 FS34079, H95 Smoke Grey, H90 Clear Red, H94 Clear Green, H344 Rust; Alclad ALC302 Grey Primer, 103 Dark Aluminum, 115 Stainless Steel, 314 Klear Kote FlatWeathering: I applied a light grey wash to the panel lines, and post shading with Gunze H95 Smoke Grey and Testors 2143 RLM21 White. Improvements/Corrections This was built pretty much out of the box, the only extra things I did were: Modified the ejection seats for lateral offset between front and rear seats Jury struts Removed strengthening plates from air brake petals Build thread: Link Pictures! And a few with the CMR Buccaneer S.2B: Cheers, Bill Edited April 2, 2018 by Navy Bird Photobucket Eradication

cngaero
There's only one thing better than a beautiful Buccaneer and that's two. Two absolute stunners.
Mountain goat
Ooooh that's a thing of beauty -one of those posts that make me say 'wow' to myself. The detailing is second to none, the subtle weathering is nicely done, but the airbrakes' insides are something else. The S.2 looks great as well. Bravo! WildeSau75
Top notch builds - like them both but prefer your later build - just because of the paint scheme. You really nailed it. Are these bombs nukes? Cheers, Michael

Thanks - I really scratched my head trying to figure out how to replicate the oil-based protective varnish applied to the inside of the air brakes. I knew from colour photos that it varied a lot in appearance, and was mostly a red-brown colour. I figured I would start with a shot of Gunze H344 Rust (which has what seems like grains of sand in it) and I liked it so much I stopped there! The blue indicates HES (High Explosive Substitute) bombs - in other words: concrete. I bet they'd still hurt though. Cheers, Bill

giemme
Stunning! Could easily be taken for a much bigger scale. Is it me or did you actually change something in your photo setup? Lighting maybe? Don't know what, but I like it a lot Ciao

According to the instruction booklet, they're the same casing as a conventional 1,000 lb. bomb. I don't know enough about British ordnance to say whether that's close to a nuke or not. I would suspect the nuke is larger, and that the Buccaneer would only carry one at a time. Anyone know for sure? On 11/13/2016 at 16:49, Bedders said: Blimey Bill, that's gorgeous. And the pair together look wonderful. They really do, don't they? I could go into debt and pick up a couple of CMR RAF Bricks - do one in grey/green camo and the other in Desert Storm colours. Then I'd have four that look great together! On 11/13/2016 at 16:49, giemme said: Stunning! Could easily be taken for a much bigger scale. I had the camera on the tripod, but that's it. What looks different to you? The biggest change from the construction photos to the finished model is the post shading with Gunze H95 Smoke Grey. That makes the white finish look a bit different. Cheers, Bill
Bucckit
Well done they look stunning. I think the sensible and fair thing to do would be to treat yourself to at least one of the RAF kits and demonstrate your deft touch at wraparound camo.

Anyone know for sure? Buccaneer was designed to carry a single Red Beard nuclear weapon of circa weight 2000lbs to attack the Sverdlov class Cruisers. By the time the RAF got them, they could carry 2x WE177 weapons (each of circa 1000lbs weight). Neither weapon had the same casing as a 1000 lb HE bomb.
