The early 899 sorry I mean 43 sqdn jets (Yes 43sqdn nicked the Aircraft ordered for HMS Eagle and 899 Squadron), are actually not easy to come by, they were on an very early Xtradecal sheet and now OOP

Now I feeld old - I actually have that one in the stash!

Cheers,

Andre

Apart from XV579 157, can anyone confirm the identity of the other camo Navy Phantom?

I think it was XV572 but can't any pictures of it.

It was XV572.  Loaned to 767NAS in camo as VL-156 between 6/5/69 and 24/3/70 then to 43Sqdn later as 'C' by 9/72.  By 3/73 had become 'N'.

There is a poor and small photo of it on the last page of Pete Fosters write up on the RAF Phantom in the Ian Allen Aircraft Illustrated Special, from which the information above is taken.

ISBN 0-7110-1870-7 is the reference

Hi James,

Here's one of XV572/156: http://www.na3t.org/air/photo/WB00064-37

As well as the one mentioned by Dennis, there is also a low quality photo on page 79 in the Osprey Air Combat series book 'McDonnell Douglas F-4K and F-4M Phantom II' by Michael Burns. It's in a line-up of 767NAS next to XV579. Better still there's a colour photo on page 123 of the Double Ugly book 'British Phantoms Volume 1'.

And then got disbanded in 1918 and didn't reform as the FAA until 1937 :tease:

Airfix are going to do quite well out of me this year, several RAF Phantoms, RAF ASR Walrus and Cuban Sea Fury...

...I take it the Airfix Toom will be coming with Air Defence weapons fit?

[Pedantry] The FAA formed in 1924 as part of the RAF and although the decision was made in 1937, the FAA was transferred to Admiralty control in May 1939 (IIRC). So the RN never got the RNAS back; the RAF had the FAA taken from it...[/Pedantry]

If you look about halfway down this page at the 3D CAD rendering, it looks like options of either the 2in RP pod or AIM-9 are in the pipeline, with AIM-7 as standard.

First rule of inter-service banter - don't let the truth get in the way of a good piddle taking!  But, thanks for the history lesson.

Thanks too for the link, Cinders!  You shall go to the ball in your air defence fit (and appropriate colour scheme )

The Xtradecal have been released https://www.hannants.co.uk/product/X72268 but still have not been corrected. Would have been a sheet to buy but not as it stands.

Hi Robert,

Could you please devellop : I am no specialist but might have been interested - What are the problems with the decal sheet.

Regards

Hmm, not sure, at a first glance the fin marking on XT866 is wrong (it's effectively a rotated square, that one looks squashed) and the 892 diamonds should be longer and thinner

Does anyone know just who designs the decals for Xtradecal these days ?.

Maybe with the renewed interest the RN will bring this one out for us all to see.

She is kept in the corner of the historic flight hanger at Yeovilton.

I Like the look of the xtra decals but please beware of the roundel placement on the upper wing , they are just not where the RAF put theirs, they are slightly more inboard

Jon Freeman does a lot of theirs these days, not sure if this is one of his.

Really ?.  I though that Jon had packed it in for a while.  I agree with you regarding the misshapen fin markings but it is up to individuals to purchase, or not, known inaccurate decals.  I cannot recommend them.

There is also the question of the placement of the underwing serials.  Commencing '74/75, underwing serials were moved inboard on all UK Phantoms.  This was to facilitate outer mainplane changes as the spar problems in that area are beginning to manifest themselves.  Long story short, this resulted in areas of pant being removed on the undersurface to facilitate NDI inspections and ultimately new outer mainlines being fitted (after my time though).

The only 892NAS FG.1 still with the underwing serials over the outer main plane was XV592 "R-005" which did not deploy for the Arks last cruise.  It was later joined, from Brough, by XV587 "R-009" and were the last two Navy Phantoms at Leuchars, looked after by a very small Naval Team, the "Royal Navy Phantom Support Unit".

XV592 was displayed in launch mode at the Leuchars Open Day on the 3/9/78 and a week later, on the 9/9/78, two deployed F-4's,  XT872 and XV591 visited Leuchars to complete final Admin tasks including processing the remnants of the ground crew who were either discharged the Service or given new drafts.  They also signed the hangar "back" to the RAF and the Army, the latter who, had already taken up residence.  The two visitors departed for the ship, handled by the local TASF,  the following day.  Once we in Eng Ops had made arrangements with St Athans to accept the two remaining aircraft, they were despatched to St. Athans, handled and flown by 111Sqdn air and ground crews, on the morning of the 27/9/78.

I wonder if Jon was also involved with the two Victor sheets, one of which has already been revised.  If not, then there must be someone at Hannants with a slightly sick and warped mind concerning one of the subjects.  The same goes for the Great Wall 144th kit.

Thanks Dave

I think he still does some work - He did stuff for Gary Madgwick's new company. The Victor sheets are certainly in Jon's style, Maybe not the F4 one but the drawings match one he previously did.
