Fiat 806: research and scratchbuilds

Recommended Posts

It´s difficult to say if there was an single  underbody  sheet or if there had  been only some smaller sheets at some places .. Personally I would not extend this sheet in the region of the rails . It´s more likely for me that sheets were " sandwiched " between the chassis rails or fixed in the region behind the tabs  . I would paint all the visible tabs , but reduce the width of the bottom sheet  to the inner borders of the rails .

I also would leave the bottom sheet unpainted .

For my model  I will glue the tabs first and cut them 1mm before the rail ends and will glue two long  1 mm strips in 90 degree angle to show the tabs construction according the scetch on page 1 of Harvey´s thread .

Many greetings !  Hannes

There´s a possibility that there had been some thin  wooden boards instead of a big sheet between the frontal sheet with it´s openings and the rear sheet around the last cross-beam . An alu sheet of this size would tear apart if there had been no strenghtening constructions imho .   Hannes

An indication for wooden planks could be the fact that the car was driven on bad roads as well as we can see on photo 22 . Even modern F1 cars have a wood-planked  floor .It should stiffen the chassis better than a vulnerable big alu sheet .  Maybe Protar learned about a wooden floor by Salamano or Massimino . The boards could have been situated between the frontal alu sheet and the rear alu sheet in the rear cross-beam region .Simple L-profiles , welded to the rails , could hold them in place .

Drawing 2 is not helpful at all regarding this topic . But according Massimino this successor version should  be 40 kg lighter compared with our car .   Hannes

Dear Olivier great fuel cap. if you wish you can also make the top part handle thinner the same way you cut the bottom part with a disc and place it again.

on painting the bottom, i would leave it entirely natural metal

perhaps you can make some indentations due to stones on the track.

This part of the car is very thin and very light and intended as barely a protection from rocks and water splashing up from the tyres, thats all.

Hi chaps,

yesterday, I was at Hyères Maquett'expo, a great expo dedicated to all kinds of static models: figures, SF, aircrafts, boats, tanks, dioramas etc... There were exceptional models, that recall us to remain humble.

I made a lot of photos, if you want, I can post a few of them, but should I do it on this thread, dedicated to the 806?

There was also a contest in which my 806 was presented (the first time I take part to such a contest, if I don't consider the one when I was 15 years old).

I won the trophy of the Hyères city, a nice cup.

But meanwhile that, I was not totally happy because the jury found that my model was not correctly painted (not bright enough, grain effect, little defects of the surface). They were mainly focused on the quality of the paint, without considering so much the huge work done to get the good shapes generally as in details.

Well, they were probably right about the paint, the varnish I applied created a grain effect, and I will try to improve that before considering my model is really over. It will be very delicate to sand and mask before redoing the body painting. A bit stressful... I can't help thinking on what said Thierry: the best may be sometimes enemy of the good...

Olivier

Congratulations !

Yes pictures please.

Don t worry about their opinion on the paint job.

What do you mean by graining ? do you mean there is "orange peel" effect ?

As long as it represents how the car probably looked back then, probably there was no polish on the car.  Just painted red, and then a greasy rug with some car polish applied by hand before the race or the pictures.

Thanks Sam!

yes, orange peel effect.

I agree with you, no question to apply a very gloss varnish. But it is true that on our photos, the car appears a bit more shiny than my model. I will rework some parts of the body paintjob, with a lot of care.

And OK, I will post some photos of the expo...

Great that you won a cup. :clap2::thumbsup::worthy::cat:

also, the quality of the models exhibited is really beautiful.

One small observation dear Olivier: the quality of your work is so high, it would do it more honour to type the info card and other papers exhibited instead of just handwriting the text etc.this humble opinion is based on the same principle as my opinion of the 'little plastic man-toy-figure (smiling?)' who is actually levelling down such a beautiful masterpiece of a noble car, otherwise a museum piece.

Personally i think you don't need such to honour Bordino or anyone involved in this great car.  Just your reproduction of the car as it is, and the few ghosts one can feel around it.

I agree with you Sam, I just did that at the last minute before the contest (on saturday). It is a first draft. I will do a photo album probably by internet with typed infos instead of handwriting.

For the driver, sorry, I won't remove it. But I should maybe ask a figure specialist to improve it...

Dear Olivier

Of course, you are right, i am not suggesting that you remove your driver, or ask that it should be redone.

Not at all, in fact it is very well done. But the car is excellent. So the levels are different, thats all i am saying.

Thanks for the pictures

My 806 is again in my "auto body shop", to get a better state of surface and if possible, a more bright paint if possible without grain effect. A complementary sanding work has been done with care (risky with many fragile parts around):

aGopBG.jpg

A coat of Alclad (mix Dark/ white alu as previously) has been applied for the 2nd time. This very thin coat is merciless: the smallest defect appears. I am not yet gonna apply my red... This red X7 will be thinned with Tamiya Lacquer thinner for a more glossy result (compared with X20 enamel thinner). If someone has a suggestion to avoid the grain effect, I would be very grateful. There is no grain effect with the Alclad, so I suppose it is the paint and thinning that is essential (Alclad are not to thin, which is one of their great qualities).

I think you're going down the rabbit hole. next, some little detail no one will ever notice is become bothersome and that will be changed which disproportions some other bit and on and on...

time to let the baby bird leave the nest.

Southpier is right imho  , dear Olivier , it´s time to consider this version as finished . I know this problem regarding my Mef . If I had to start again today , I would  alter the rear for instance .

But it is as  it is and I won´t change it anymore . My suggestion is ;  Build the Mef and you will learn a lot which is useful for further constructions . Wait , till Harvey´s and my build made progresses and you will possibly want to build the 806 again  in a slightly different scale including different proportions according Nick´s virtual model .I´m sure you will finally find out that his virtual model is highly  correct  ( about 95 per cent ) You just need some distance right now .

Your great model is a pioneer´s work and a huge  milestone . But it´s almost impossible to build a 100 per cent correct model ,

That´s why my suggestion is ; Buy the Mef´s kit and open a new thread ! I will support you as good as I can if you wish and I´m sure , our good Sam will do the same !

Nobody can claim that he built a more realistic 806 as you did !  You were the first man on the moon and noone else ! Now it´s time to visit the planet Mef !

Many greetings !  Hannes

Dear southpier and Hannes,

I promise you that this body paintjob will be the last one of my build. I could have leave it as it was, but the criticisms I got from the jury convinced me to improve that. A new challenge, but definitely the last one. After that, last set of photos and then my build will return in my round showcase. And indeed the Mef should be my next build, hoping the kit is better than this one...

The Mef´s kit is easier regarding alterings of the bodywork . But there are a lot of improvements posssible regarding detailling and  fine works . . And that´s exactly your metier ! Thousands of photos will help to build a highly correct model . I can give two good advices : Forget the instruction booklet and  build a construction cradle ! This cradle , built within an hour , will  save you a lot of time !!

Many greetings !  Hannes

Who knows, you may learn new skills along the journey, too!

Every build I do learns me many things. It was particularly the case with this one, of course...

Cheers, O ;)

Dear Olivier, for women, the duration of gestation is only 9 months, no pregnant women would want to increase this time, even for obtaining a nicer baby :)

Dear friends,

after the rabbit and the bird, the pregnant women... you like metaphors!

I know I am a perfectionist (as you, CC...). If I had not been, I would have finished my build long ago, but it wouldn't be as it is... ;)

Dear Olivier , it´s a similar construction like my 806 cradle  but the chassis can be situated higher ( the wheels don´t need to touch the ground ) It can be done easily and all you need is a stable board from the construction market and some Evergreen profiles and plates . I could draw a scetch if you want . This way your long chassis is in a horizontal position and it´s much easier to construct a good model . Kurtl made a cradle as well . For the Mef engine an extra cradle is highly recommended . It´s easy to do and you will have a lot of advantages . Trust me ! I also own the Protar booklet and  some good photos in an article . Most important are discussions before starting with any construction measures .There are a lot of  aspects to consider .

I´m sure you will enjoy the build of the Mef . It´s an unique experience and highly rewarding !

Many greetings !  Hannes

I´ll post a scetch tomorrow because I need to find my old cradle parts first. This cradle is not only helpful for your construction , it also prevents painted parts from getting damaged .And of course you can remove your construction from the cradle at any time by lifting and insert it again in a second . It´s a very useful tool !   Hannes

Dear all,

Yes building the Mef. is a joy.  if Olivier needs any help - and am sure he does not need any - i will be very happy to help.

after the photobucket debacle my build progress pictures have disappeared. Luckily i have a few which are not on Photobucket ( we can not download pictures anymore to move them elsewhere ) so i will probably start again a part 2 on a new thread. i am spending time detailing the engine and replacing several parts with metal etc. i love this crazy engine and this car.

As for the cradle, yes dear Hannes is right, very important.  i will upload a picture of mine when i am back home this week end ( am traveling ).

Evening chaps,

Seems like a long time since I signed in. Hope you are well.

Olivier, In the words of our american cousins - put the paint down and move away from the model! Looks good to me already. There's plenty of other models to try. And plenty of cars that you can only build from scratch.

Hannes, thanks for the vote of confidence - I think we might all be a lot older before I succeed.

ATB

Nick
