"Home is the hunter"

DSCN5363.jpg

Figures (beautifully) sculpted by A. Gargarin of Master Box, built OOB except the discarded parachute pack and flying helmet were slightly modified from the originals; build thread here - thanks to everyone who dropped in or came to have a look. The paints used were for the most part Citadel acrylics and washes from the Games Workshop.

The base was a cheap picture frame from eBay and some Javis grass mat.

The excellence of the figure sculpts and a variety of Citadel washes - which they once nicknamed "talent in a bottle" - made this an easy and painless build.

I did however reach the conclusion that painting larger figures is actually harder than painting small ones, as so much more needs to be done and any errors or clumsiness of technique magnified accordingly with the increase in scale. I have decided as a result that I will never paint in 1:1 scale :D

The title "Home is the hunter" is a fragment of a poem by A E Housman, which I had confused with Robert Louis Stevenson's self-penned epitaph. Both have a certain resonance in this context, and both are concerned with endings of one sort or another.

Finally I'd like to express my grateful thanks to stevej60 who provided the figures out of the kindness of his heart - thank you Steve, I hope I have done as well as you hoped - and to Enzo and Stix for setting up and running the GB.

Cheers,

Stew

"Mooooo shall not Pass!!!"

Revell, 1/72 T-90S, Indian Army

A stereotypical scene in India, our nation's First Citizens hold their rightful place of pride on our roads.

A lethal tank with it's immense firepower, capable of vaporizing armored vehicles 6kms away can be stopped dead in it's tracks with her gentle stubbornness. It's time for us mortals in our relatively flimsy cars to resign to our destiny.

"Road to Berlin" - 1/48 Tamiya IS-2

Kit: Tamiya 1/48 IS-2 (built for the Great Patriotic War GB). WIP: Here. RFI: Here.

Figures: Tamiya and ICM

Base: 4mm MDF mounted in a Wilkos 7in x 5in picture frame

Scenery: Filler over expanded polystyrene, painted with Humbrol Dark earth and then a variety of turf scatters, grass tufts and trees from Woodlands Scenics, Greenscene, etc. applied. The fencing was wooden coffee stirrers mounted on square strips of softwood and the road sign was created in Photoshop.

The Vignette:

One of the IS-2s in the Russian tank column, en route to Berlin, is passing the female army traffic controller who has just given permission to proceed. Just at that second there's an alert that there's possibly German troops/armour in the fields/forest to the south. Some of the IS-2 troops/crew are more alert than others and instantly spring into action - the others are getting there more slowly as the tank commander smiles as he brings his large gun around ready for firing.

Good day everyone, this is my effort for this fine GB. It is of a Spitfire that has crash landed on a beach and been subject to thievery and several tides so it has sunken quite deep in the sand. It is here now being vandalized by a generic German who is easily confused! The kit is a 1:48 Airfix version but an older mold. Most of it wasn't used however. The figure is a spare from an Eduard WW1 kit which has been modified to try and make him look generic and more suitable for the time period. Thoroughly enjoyed branching out into this new dimension. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you......."Dumbkopf!"

"...while simultaneously patting myself on the back for my splendid marksmanship...all hell broke loose..."

                                                                                                                               - Capt Donald Balch

This vignette is an attempt to recreate this reference picture of USMC Capt Donald Balch upon his harrowing landing after a dogfight over the Solomon Islands in 1943. After shooting down a Zero, his Corsair was hit, but held together until the controls failed as he flared for landing.

The kit is Tamiya's 1/72 F4U-1 'Birdcage' (my fifth for the year, but only the second to make it to a successful completeion). The build thread is here.

U.D.T. Boat and frogmen 1/35

This vignette keeps all the figures within the 6 x 6 area with just the boat & dinghy overhanging.

This is the monogram/revell 1967 kit built OOB with Mantis miniatures 1/35 fish and use of clear plastic sheeting and copious amounts of kristal clear.

Finnish Army BAB B armoured car

(captured Soviet BA-20)

Continuation War, Summer 1941

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

A variety of these lightly armed cars were in use by the Finnish Army, exact number is not known, but at least 18 were on hand at the start of the Continuation War.  They appear to have been used mainly as liaison/dispatch and command vehicles.

"The Chase"

Somewhere in Oklahoma during the Civil War

This vignette represents a possible chasing scene in the Oklahoma prairies, during the Civil War. The Indian tracker (most likely a Cherokee) is kneed down checking an extinguished campfire and an abandoned Confederate hat, while the Unionist scout is looking for possible traces from the top of his mount.

The kit is the Masterbox 1/35 Yankee Scout and Tracker; the base is a 6x6 " MDF, with modelling paste on top of it for the ground and the big stone. The greenery is made with a mix of modelling grass, actual moss and lichens. The campfire wood is some actual wood I picked up in my yard and slightly burned for a more realistic effect. The build thread is here. Enjoy.

Edit: I forgot to add my thanks to Enzo and Stix for setting up and running this Group Build. Thanks a lot guys!

Hi All,

I had to head off for a work trip on Monday and just got five minutes to take these rather disappointing photos in my wife's work space before I had to go to the airport. The bright light and blanket are great for upholstery but not so good for model photos! And I forgot to fold the wheels up! Anyhow, work in progress is here, and here are the pictures:

Thanks for looking,

Somewhere in Britain - a Railway-ish scene

N Gauge

When I started building this, the plan was to do something with the N gauge locos and rolling stock that I had in the loft. Size restrictions limited what I was able to do, and so it developed from recollections of childhood memories into what you see here.

My grandparents lived in a terrace similar to the one shown here. I had a trolley/bogie/soapbox made from scraps of wood and old pram wheels and along with friends would race up and down the roadway outside our houses. I can remember the days when cars were a rarity and the first one to appear in our street was a Ford Cortina Mk1- owned by a chap who had won money on the football pools. I could not find a Ford Cortina in N gauge so chose to replace it with a Ford Anglia.

Items used

Metcalffe Card Kits - Terrace, Wall and Road

Ratio - Streetlights

Noch - Figures

Hornby-Minitrix  -  Class 2MT 2-6-2

Peco - Rolling Stock and Fencing

Oxford Diecast - Vehicles

Javis/Gaugemaster - Additional scenic materials
