Valom Bristol Brigand B.1 1/72, another restart

Some pictures after repaint and glosscoat:

The black on the underside looks completely different with gloss on top:

I think postshading is the way to go with black surfaces...

Decaling time then. Only about 25 to be stuck on and no stencils so it almost feels like cheating.

They behave quite ok though, so no problems there.

SWMBO will want to have some chores done, so I guess the landing gear construction will have to wait a while...

So, what news in the Brigand workshop?

Well, I started to think dirty thoughts...

But then I got distracted by the undercarriage

33645050426_389aa769b1_o.jpg

The main wheels are 2mm more narrow than the undercarriage?

Nice surprise there Valom!

What do to for my next move...

Insert spacers in the wheels?

Narrow the undercarriage?

Answers below please, not on a postcard ;-)

Good old Valom! I seem to recall on the Buckingham and Buckmaster kits I built the need to cut off the spigots on the undercarriage legs, drill through the centre of the wheel, insert a section of paper clip wire long enough to reach the legs of the undercarriage frame. I think I also squeezed them in a bit so not too much of the paper clip axle was showing. Hope that makes sense.

Nothing for it then but to cut them apart again and shim them out... good luck!

She does have quite wide wheels:

Hi Christer

As can be seen here there actually was quite a bit of a gap either side of the wheels..........but the wheels also look wider than the kit ones

regards,  Adrian

Oh dear.....Copy and Pasting pictures from the web seems to have stopped working for me since the upgrade..................

A question about the rocket rails.

Valom provides nice rails for a Typhoon...but were that type of rail in use for the Brigand?

Airfix late type Beaufighter has a completely different setup.

Confusion abounds!

Brigands appear to have had the zero length type on the TF.1 and the Typhoon style ones on Malayan Emergency bombers.  Hate to say it, considering the mess Valom made of the detail in the rest of the kit, but their rails are fine.  They could be worse - the white metal ones in the old Elliott vacform were copies of the old Frog Firefly rails.

You're making a fine job of what is a pig of a kit.  I've just finished struggling with the Magna one, which has been on and mainly off since 2000!

Your Brigand is coming along very nicely.

It's one of those aeroplanes that I've got a real soft spot for, but I can't explain why.

I can't wait to see it in RFI.

Thanks Wooksta!

Then I'll use the rails without feeling sorry for that.

Not much left to do now, but there will be at least one more pictorial update here before the RFI :)

Cngaero (or was it Chris?), I forgot to say thank you!

Here is the promised picture update:

The wheels was finally painted and installed

Also note the small triangle on one side of the landing gear leg. It's a support I made for the locking strut (I guess it is...) to connect to.

However, the strut is almost 5mm too long! Thanks Valom!

Some sanding and fixing later, and all three landing gears are in place

Unfortunately the right main wheel axle is seriously twisted so that wheel got a real problem with toe out. If I can't fix it with brute force, then I'll just leave it.

Another thing that bothered me for a while was the propeller blades. These are moulded as separate pieces, and the spinners have four small dimples there the blade are supposed to go.

Well I drilled in those small dimples but somehow one of the were not located properly.

I cut of the offending locating pin on the blade, and inserted another one.

It also looks as one blade might need a little more paint.

Once installed the props and fans looks quite allright

I've must have done something right...

Time to add a flat coat, some gear doors and rocket rails and all those little tiny details that always jumps at you at the very last minute.

Until then!
