Airfix 1/48 BP Defiant Mk 1

Recommended Posts

A lot of Defiants   those last days, but I must admit that your

is particularly beautiful, and fantastically realistic.

May I ask which paint you use for the "sky" under surfaces ?

Could it be Humbrol #23, or Revell #59 ?

Thank you in advance for your answer. Polo.

Polo1112 if you look through the build article in the link at post 1 you should find on page 2 that Humbrol 90 was used, unless my notoriously unreliable eyes deceive me.  Thing is I have a number of tins of this colour in stock, of varying ages, and they're all different!  N1572 could have been delivered with factory-applied Sky undersides, but could also have been supplied with Night/White undersides and repainted at the receiving Maintenance Unit or at squadron level.

During 1940 factory-mixed Sky was hard to come by and had to be mixed at squadron level to approximate to the "Eau-de-nil" or "Duck Egg Green" called for in the Air Ministry Order ("AMO"), so it's quite possible that, even within one unit, aircraft would show a number of variations as not many would, or could, be painted from one batch of paint.

I was talking to a paint supplier earlier this year, who specialises in automotive paints but can have BS or RAL colours mixed to order, who surprised me by telling me that there is a 10% tolerance on BS colours.  Maybe not so standard after all?
