Samuelmcguire
Hi guys I'm looking at repaint my Dragon Models Iron Man and I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good paint to get that nice red metallic look. I'm not to fussed about the gold and silver I think I will look at the alclad colours although I welcome any advice on these as I've never really painted any kind of metallic look before thanks Sam
Kallisti
I did the Moebius Iron Man Mk VI kit a couple of years back and used Alclads on them, you can see the thread here http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234955607-iron-man-mk-vi-16-moebius-kit/ I used the Alclad gloss black paint then a overall coat of Pale Gold which is then the base coat for the Candy Red which needs a metalic colour underneath to get the best results. This is what it looked like at the end
Samuelmcguire
Awesome thanks! Although after a bit of research it looks like alclad doesn't work well with a brush is this true? As I don't have an airbrush and wasn't planning to invest anytime soon..
Kallisti
No you can't brush paint Alclad. There are some other metallic paints out there from MiG and so on but I don't know much about them I'm afraid.
Richard Baker
Not sure if this will help, but some craft stores & hobby shops sold a simple airbrush which used a can of compressed air - I believe Testers made one. It was dirt cheap and sufficient for one modeling build.
Grumpy Popeye
For my Dragon MK XVII, I used a base coat of Tamiya gold and top coated with Tamiya Mica Red. The red is just slightly translucent, allowing the gold to add a bit of a tint. Edited March 7, 2017 by Grumpy Popeye
Richard Baker
Love that effect- it gives the surface some real depth!
