My entry for this groupbuild is Revell's Reno Racer, Miss America.

Picked it up cheap of ebay earlier this year.

Been surfin the net and found a great reference source, http://www.missa-racing.com/.

I am thinking of going with the scheme on the website, prefer it to the boxed scheme.

As a warm up, I built the T-6 Miss Behavin. Nice kit but the decals were a bit of a struggle.

Well, the website version is only slightly easier than the kit scheme.  This'll be a good one to watch!  I'd suggest that getting the kit to the "ready for the paint scheme" stage is less than 25%, but that's not an official host-opinion!

Hi:

First I assume you have found this http://www.mustangsmustangs.com/p-51/survivors/serial/44-74536

but I also wanted to tell you that I live about 30 minutes drive from the Miss America so if you need any detail photos just drop me a line.

There was some talk about her being up for sale but as far as I know she is still sitting in Oklahoma City.

Looking forward to your build.

very nice choice, good to see a Racing Mustang in the build. The T-6 looks really nice, well done on that one.

Good luck with the build, look forward to seeing her in the gallery.

Thanks for the link and the offer. Think I am ok for references at the moment.

An old modelling, plastic quite brittle with raised panels lines.

Having studied the various websites, the main changes I need to make:

  • Conversion to two seater
  • Clip the wings. References suggest that Miss America has a cilpped wing span of 32ft, which means I need to remove 15.9mm from each wing tip.
  • scratch build some aerials
  • remove wing pylons and guns.

Made a start on the conversion to a two seater, just using to scrap plasticard. Pilot seat will be replaced with an Ultracast seat.

The back seat is from the spares box. Fuselage taped together to check fit. Still a bit of work to do.

Wings marked ready for the point of no return. Will check my measurements again before finally committing saw to plastic.

Work on the cockpit completed.

Past the point of no return, clipped the wings. Built up new wingtips using plasicard. Still need to do a bit of tidying up.

Wings attached. Will attach the tailplanes after painting, to make the masking easier.

Almost a month since my last update. Progress has continued slowly, seemed to spend a lot of time masking.

And finally the big reveal!!!! Not perfect but better than I was expecting. A little tidy up required.

Decaling underway, mixture of the kit decals and the spares box.

Only thing left to do is to add some aerials from plasticard.

A simple kit, but enjoyed it. A nice one to finish the modelling year with.
