activexp
Another vintage kit to add to my collection of historically interesting cars. The Cord 812 was the first American-designed and built front wheel drive car with independent front suspension. Power came from a 4,739 cc Lycoming V8 engine developing 125BHP. Is this an oxymoron? Many parts have come off the sprues. A bonus part found in the box, not part of the kit!
arni
I shall follow along as I have a 24/25th version of this.
activexp
Good to have you on board arni ( Nigel) A comparison of the two kits would be interesting. I've started on the engine and transmission. As is typical of a kit of this age, most parts need a bit of re-working and cleaning up to get a good fit due to heavy seam lines and flash. Finer details such as tubing/plumbing and wiring are lacking.
bentwaters81tfw
I have one of these stalled at present. I bought it 'unstarted' from America, only to find it had been badly started and 'dismantled' (read broken apart,) and the steering and engine being assembled back to front. I need to make some replacement parts. Hopefully I will get back to it next year. I have built the 1/24 scale one as well.
activexp
That's seriously bad, hope you got compensation from the seller. How did the 1/24 version turn out?
bentwaters81tfw
Not a penny, but he got some seriously bad feedback. The 24th scale one is good. Just remember to glue the bodyside FLUSH with the floor - don't tuck the floor inside - it's a butt joint.

activexp
A little more progress on the engine and transmission, assembled the right way round

activexp
Thanks Nigel, I see it's a Lindberg kit and by all accounts, a good one. Moving on with this build. engine now finished . ...........and made a start on the chassis.........
arni
Look what your uncle Nigel has for you,a baby Cord. The chrome The rest..
activexp
Thanks Uncle Nigel for posting the sprue pics of the baby, very cute. Does it come with whitewall tyres? A little more done on the big daddy version, front suspension and poseable steering. Quite fiddly due to numerous ball joints and links and some vague placements. Another vague placement is the radio aerial. It's guesswork where it goes. As the box art depicts the vehicle with whitewall tyres, I decided with some trepidation to attempt painting them, not an easy masking job. The finished result was better than expected.
activexp
Moving on to the body, primed and ready for dark blue paint job in preference to yellow. Doors completed and the window winders actually work :). I really don't like the ugly hinges so I think I might remove them and have the doors permanently closed. bentwaters81tfw
No pop up headlights?
activexp
Sadly not. A lot of finer detail lacking at this scale.
bentwaters81tfw
That's odd. Mine has. It looks like the front wings have been re-moulded in one piece. Mine are separate, and you get underwing boxes, tip ups and lenses.
activexp
That is odd. Mine has a date on the box - 1980 and 'Matchbox Lesney AMT Corporation'. Perhaps you have a later version.
RichO
I once bought a kit were almost all the parts were off the sprues. Nice start Steve, good engine detail.
bentwaters81tfw
No. Mine is older than that. It also has the front end pre-chromed on the louvre edges.
activexp
I was expecting some chrome parts for the louvres with this kit, but no. I've attempted painting them instead with mediocre results. Your kit sounds much better than this one.
bentwaters81tfw
For the chrome, try some PlastiKote Brilliant Metallic Chrome Silver. (Homebase) Mask with the new Tamiya tape for curves. You may need to stretch it to get the width right. Try and spray it all in one go, as it WILL lift if you try and mask over it. It also fingermarks, so it needs a coat of Kleer.

I think I can live without it.

Unfortunately I had some seepage which has left it less tidy than I had hoped. Does your kit come with any decals? All you get in this kit is a paper cutout for the dash, nothing else. bentwaters81tfw
Paint kleer or the base colour over the masking tape first to seal the edge. Yes, just the paper panel.
