Acrylic paint lifting when masking

That is great Curt.

 

One thing though. I cannot understand why you mask twice. If for instance with an aircraft with two colour camouflage I paint the whole aircraft the first colour no masking. I only mask for the second colour.

 

Perhaps I have misunderstood and missing something Curt. But if right you will get a mark on the first coat coming through on the masking joint plus one on the second as they over lap.

I did type a lot...lol. I guess there are 2 ways to do it...the one I use may not be the best due to my mistake experience with lifting. I used Number 1.

 

1. Primer, mask edges, paint center part silver, unmask edges and mask middle, paint edges black. (the black is painted on the primer)

2. Primer, paint whole part silver, mask middle to paint edges black. (the black is painted on the silver)

There is a third way, some prefer painting the coloured markings first, mask those, and then apply the aircraft color.  This method involves a lot less area to be covered up.

I forgot about that..it has been 40 years since I have built a kit.

 

Do the colors come into play when masking? I thought you painted the lighter color first then the darker in case you need to touch up.

I would have used 2. Paint the whole piece silver. Then mask just once for the black.

 

You will that way get a better finish on the line of the transition.

I have 2 kits on the workbench and followed your details.  I have masked and lifted the tape off without any lifting.
