**** Finished **** 6 Pounder Anti-Tank gun and Universal Carrier

Recommended Posts

I thought I would do something a bit different from my FAA planes for this. I do have a Fulmar,Swordfish and Maryland sitting for later if time permits. My other interest is the 8th Army in the desert so I had a look in the stash for something that shouldn't be too difficult and came across this.

I first made one of these back in the 60's when still at primary school. It came in the old Airfix poly bag and cost 2 shillings. It was probably bought at Woolworths.

The mouldings have stood the test of time pretty well and although not 100% crisp are pretty good, almost flash free, without short moulding or mould seams. The plastic is a little soft and there are a number of ejection pin holes. I will fill those that will show with Perfect Putty but not bother with the rest.

A single page of instructions and a set of transfers for a Normandy example. I'll scavenge transfers from other kits.

Ejection pin holes filled and seams sanded. You can see a couple of my 'high tech' sanders for getting into awkward areas as well.

Carrier slotted together in an hour or so. Just waiting some filling and another coat of paint. Fits fine after all these years.

Although it's a bit chunky and lacks fine detail Its worth remembering it's less than 2 inches long.

Here we after a bit filling with Perfect Putty, and it was minimal, and another coat of paint. Sitting wasting also ngside its soon to be fitted tracks and dust guard.

And while waiting to dry, started on the 6 pounder. Gun moulding is excellent, and although lacks the crispness of modern mouldings is round and free of mould lines. A little bit of flash needed sanding but that's it.

A bit industrial looking but in general these were not subtlety built pieces of ordinance.

The gun carriage is complete and tracks on but photos ro come later.

Here we are with the tracks on.

And the gun, awaiting its wheels and a final coat of paint. Putting together the various moving parts took a little bit of time and was a typical Three handed job. I also had to sand the discs at the ends of the trails as they were a little thick and obstructed the firing of the trunnions and chassis.

Here they are together. Just the dust guards to add. Can't be mudguards in the desert!

Almost there. A bit of touching up, some transfers and a bit of dry brushing and a wash.

  • 2 weeks later...

Here we are with some transfers filched from a more sophisticated boxing (an IBG Models carrier).

And finished. The transfers matted down and a dry brushing of some citadel Boneyard Earth to lighten and distress the finish a little. More in the gallery. It's a little bit crude but I like it and it was fun to build despite its age.

Very nice. I didn't know this one had been re-released.

I got it when ModelZone closed down but I've seen it around. Latest was yesterday in a hobbycraft store in Havant priced £6. I did resist.
