Airlander prang?

Just read a post on social media from a lady friend who is saying she just saw the airship had a bit of a prang, and filmed it too, but at the time of writing hasn't posted it.She says the pilots walked away from it, and is waiting to see if the AAIB want her video. Beyond that I know nothing, and haven't see anything in the news yet, unless anyone else has, but may be worth keeping an eye, or ear, out for

EDIT: I've seen a couple of still photos under a headline of "...damaged after bad landing". Seems to have come down hard on the cockpit cupola from a height

Eeek! Looks like that engine pod is pointing skyward, which seems to suggest the pilot was doing his best to avoid it in the "up" direction. Hopefully they'll learn some lessons (like don't crash into telegraph poles) & move on. Doesn't say if anyone was hurt, but hopefully that's a sign that no-one was

My friend says it absolutely did not hit a telegraph pole. She says the mooring cable hit a power line which then caused sparks and snaked up toward the Airlander.

A spokesman said: "The flight went really well and the only issue was when it landed." That's kind of important, isn't it? :) A bit like saying the Titanic's maiden voyage went well.........until it hit the iceberg. (Not making any kind of fun of this, glad everyone walked away).

watched the video. Contact with the ground at all of 2 mph

And several tons worth of inertia, which makes for gigantic crunching noises when you run it into the planet. It appears as though they'll be doing a fair amount of rebuilding of the gondola, not to mention what may have been displaced inside the envelope (I can see several areas which are wrinkled, indicative of internal damage). Luckily, the reports on CBC say that nobody was injured, which speaks well of the basic soundness of the design.

Plenty of time for the occupants to abseil out of the way!

Reminds me of a Farnborough Airshow preview back in the 80's when I saw a pair of Skyship 500's beat up the runway on arrival.

It took 10 minutes!

I once watch from close to an Airship 500 land at RAF Benson. For an airship it was a hard landing, the undercarriage leg compressed fully, the gondola came to a dead stop and the inertia of the gas bag caused it to wrap itself arond the gondola covering most of the Windows. The gas bag then rebounded until the wheel left the ground. This 'bounced landing' took several seconds from start to finish rather like today's slow motion prang.

Now that picture wouldn't make a very inspiring Album cover would it?

Oh yes, though I hear Countess Frau von Airlander isn't too chuffed

The footage of the whole crash seems innocuous until it zooms in and you can see one of the pilots dangling outside the front of the cockpit, narrowly avoiding being crushed when it hits the deck for a second time.

I'll be interested to see how they get it back to the hangars: can't exactly drag it along the ground, can they?
