Killingholme
Hi all, Historic England have marked the centenary of the loss of HMS Falmouth by commissioning a 3d scan of the wreck. HMS Falmouth was one of the (in my opinion) rather gorgeous Town class Light Cruisers. She was lost after striking a mine in British waters in 1916. Before that she was a bona fide Jutland Veteran and hence the only (British) ex-Jutland ship resting in UK waters. Historic England have taken the results of a seabed survey, which was carried out in partnership with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, and combined them with a digital 3D image of a builder’s model of HMS Falmouth held by the Imperial War Museum at Chatham Historic Dockyard. The results are quite cool. https://historicengland.org.uk/whats-new/news/jutland-wreck-brought-to-life There's also a very nicely done booklet to accomany the works http://www.buildingconservation.com/hms-falmouth/index.html Well worth a look! Killingholme
No probs Martin. With all the general commemoration of WWI going on it's a shame that the naval war and hundreds of thousands of people of all nationalities who served at sea are STILL rather sidelined. Anything done to address the balance is worth while- even if in this case the only way they could get the story in the papers was by using the magic word 'Jutland'. Incidentally, some of Falmouth's logs are amongst a large number transcribed online here: http://www.naval-history.net/OWShips-WW1-06-HMS_Falmouth.htm Will
