Big Nick's Luftwaffe Lightning in challenging 1/72. Too much noble failure

If What If schemes are allowed according to the Big Cheese they are! One challenge overcome :thanks: Next hurdle is if my replacement resin bang seat arrives in time. This may will be the new Airfix 1/72 Lightning in post war Luftwaffe service c/w sidewinders (Which the RAF should have also been allowed to get-apparently).

Or

It will be a KV-2 from the lovely HobbyBoss kit with a twist assuming the required bits, whose location I am temporarily unaware of, reveal themselves by whatever arcane or occult methods I am able to bring to bear.

The Goddess smiles in my general direction at the moment. While looking for missing KV parts for my GPW GB I found the decals for this model. Cracking!

Should be fun! (That bit hasn't changed) :D

The replacement seat is, apparently, on it's way to Sleeper Central, has arrived at Sleeper Central well done to Mark and his team at Oxonians. What-Ifs are OK so that seems to be that.

A Lightning it will be! First post amended to reflect the new truth.

EDIT: To record progress of a sort B)

Got the internal detail painting done. Sidewinders built to be painted next. Wings joined and fuselage inserts under way. In this segment I have mostly been listening to Planet Rock and eating custard donuts (I know how to live me).

Biggest pain is using enamels but there's always a way.

Next coffee then back to the campaign.

Thank You Kind Sir!

Currently having a cup of coffee, this session I have been listening to Absolute 80s. Now just waiting for glue to harden before the 21:00 update which should also feature the first decals! Admittedly only in the cockpit though.

Beautiful Brassin Sidewinders with white undercoat. The probes on the noses are to be removed but are handy for holding them. Fuslage half showing forward duct cap in place after a fair bit of muttering.

tumblr_ocl4d5OAX51t8blhlo2_1280.jpg

Front intake trunking and cockpit all in one piece and a blast of aluminium down each intake to cover the slight seam showing. Fit of bullet is superb!

tumblr_ocl4d5OAX51t8blhlo3_1280.jpg

Fuselage half with exhausts all done. Needed bit of fettling to get them to sit right but all is good. The front bulkhead also needed to be thinned to approx half its original thickness. Wings with under carriage attached, this will need to be really solid by the end of play so glued ASAP in the build.

tumblr_ocl4d5OAX51t8blhlo4_1280.jpg

Different angle of exhaust assembly showing how much needs to be removed. Don't be afraid of using very coarse paper but take it slow in any case as the plastic is rather soft.

So half way through session one. Yes I'm being a woss and going for the 2 shift option. By now all the paint should be hard enough to carry on so I will.

And as if by magic a Lightning appeared

Just letting the wing join and filler harden before resuming the offensive. The sprues are pleasingly empty and the gloss white on the Sidewinders is on. Should be able to decal them in a few minutes. It looks like my schedule of aircraft primed and underside top coat on by 03:00 may be achieved.

Looking around the threads I've seen food which has set my ample stomach rumbling. Exit stage left in pursuit of pizza. I have been mostly listening to Alice Cooper, Gun 'n' Roses and the Manic Street Preachers this session.

It will give the gloss white a little longer to harden.

I have also seen some very nice work Well Done to All so far including the early finishers!

Thanks for the comments people. Without further ado I show that things are as they were and some very empty sprues. The sharp of eye will have noticed no bang seat pictures, well Billy the Bang Seat went off in a huff but has now returned via the floor under my sofa.

Fifteen hours in. The underside paint and gloss varnish are on. Both acrylics but a near catastrophe :yikes: the silver is a Kawasaki silver left over from my old day job. It went on like treacle. I rapidly wiped most of it off and then had another go which came out much better. I have nothing for admiration for Mr Halfords clear lacquer which went on beautifully.

Then the canopy parts :weep: both parts had the by now expected Airfix flaws. I've sanded and polished the worst away but they're not brilliant. I hope to rescue them with clear gloss later. In the meantime they're masked and I've even remembered to protect the inside!

The bang seat is nearly done just needs some detail painting and I've just splashed some black on the control stick which I'd missed.

This session I have been mostly listening to the street life of Long Eaton. Much coffee and some cold pizza  and I'm ready for the surge to the end. Like a leaping gazelle I am....

Grey coat done using Humbrol 79. My last can of this and a nasty few minutes while I found it. Strange position due to being in the blast from my PC fan to get it dry a bit quicker.

This session I have been back on Absolute 80s but feel the need for something different so Planet Rock for a while and a little break to get some tidying up done. I've also got some croissants for my late lunch.

Looks like my workbench, only tidier!

It first I thought a German Lightning Whif was a bit outrageous, but if you think about it it's perfectly possible.

It very nearly came to pass. As the F-104 was just starting to prove itself a bit of a hand-full a scandal erupted about Lockheed paying 'considerations' to get the order. The Germans preferred a twin engined solution and were very keen on the Phantom but there was no chance of an early delivery. BAC originally had offered the Lightning and it was looked at favourably but lost out. As the F-104 had entered service in large numbers when the scandal broke the order was allowed to stand. If it had broken before reasonable numbers had arrived then the Lightning would have stood a very good chance. IIRC the RAF were even up to allow some of their airframes to be loaned while German ones were built.

The Sidewinder fitment would free up a lot of weight and space from the Red Top/ Firestreak electronics for recce equipment (part of the Luftwaffe requirement) or extra fuel. It could have been a MLU when the Phantom arrived in Germany to enhance capability and promote commonality.

What-Ifs are hard work if developed properly. :banghead:

Still waiting for the triple-damned green to go off enough for a second coat....
