shood23
Right so I know just recently I have been very busy with family life and work to make much progress on models but the last of the bits I wanted for this turned up today and I couldn't resist on making a start on it. Here's the bits I have, obviously the kit which is as crisp as the other 2 versions, the acustion carbon decal set, museum collection option decals with drivers helmet decals for both mclaren drivers and Sebastian vettel oddly, top studio exhaust mod and a gf driver figure. Close up of the museum collection decals which like I said have numerous options but for me I will be making either the us gp spec or Mexico gp spec so only need the Hilton decals and I haven't made my mind up yet which driver to do alonso or button or even vettel lol And finally the driver figure, I had to wait a while for this one as it was from autosportmodels and they haven't had the post 2009 drivers with the hans device in for a while but it popped up on ebay the other night so I had to get it, i have to be honest i was thinking of using the driver thats bent down looking at something under the car but i like mclaren a little and felt that was a little harsh even though i would have suited last year's car more. I have also made a full set of 2015 mclaren drivers suit decals myself, well six sets actually as I was worried about the quality as they are so small but they all turned out great so now I have 5 extra sets (if anyone else is wanting to make a driver for this let me know and I will send you a set for free within the uk) Actual plastic mutilation will be starting very soon Shaun Edited March 30, 2017 by shood23
MetroRacing
Not a big F1 fan, but I like to see builds of the cars as they are always intriguing. Plus it's one of your builds so it'll be even better Ashley
Hugh Jampton
Shaun I've been waiting for you to start this one. Great to see a figure being incorporated, into a F1 car every so often and that is a great pose, I have a very similar figure in 1:24 scale for an old Revell Renault R23 and it does bring life into the model. Give me a shout if you have a problem with the visor as I have a nice little method in shaping it. I may take you up on the driver decals aswell. shood23
So finally with things being finished I now have some time for this and some new projects Thanks for the offer John I may well take you up on that. So I have cleaned up most of the little resin guy And then couldn't resist a quick mock up in another car to see how it looks And the decals I made for him, I still have decided on button or alonso so made both driver names up And now the car Tyres are again very nicely made with very crops pirelli markings The frontal part of the car with the little stubby "nose"/appendage lol As this is the third mp4/30 I have made now I more or less know all the problem areas like the side pods inner parts are a pain to fit if you follow the instructions and even worse if you want to fill the join between them But they go together very quickly and without a hitch this time And finally the front and rear parts are stuck together after the s-duct parts were glued in place This may have seemed to go together very quickly but that is, like I said above, my third time at this now so its almost second nature to me know, I can guarantee that when you make this for the first time it will not just pop together. shood23
Right so a very small update for this build I have painted the driver figures body and arms up in white ready for the decals More soon (that time on the actual car though) Shaun

Hugh Jampton
Shaun So looking forward to seeing this figure finished. Are you painting and decaling before the arms are attached? I have always filled the joins before painting, I know join are on the suit seams and the arms make applying decals more difficult. noeyedears
Very interested to see an ebro kit with all the cf decals done. Oh, and very cool driver figure too.
shood23
Thanks guys for the kind words John I will/have painted the driver before sticking together as most of the joins on this are hidden by the ruffles in the driver suit plus it then gives more scope for positioning nearer the end. And noeyedears I have done the mid season car also with the same carbon decal kit and a few added bits by myself, check it out in the link below http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235003168-ebbro-mclaren-honda-mp430-mid-season-verion/ So now on with this build Over the last couple of days mainly have been spent thinking and the driver figure which I have now put my decals on Front Back And arms Then they were all given a couple of coats of flat clear and pinned together to give an idea on how they will look, I maybe should have gone down John's route of glueing and filling before painting but I should be able to fill the gap (which is very tight when squeezed) with a couple of layers of paint when done I also made a start on the helmet after deciding which driver to do (button) but found the colour his helmet was last season to be a pain to find so mixed up zeros mclaren Marlboro red with some zeros Ferrari pretty 04 red to give more red than orange hue and it looks not far off before clear coating On to the car I thought I had finished all the sanding, this will become apparent as to why I thought I'd finished very soon, so I made a start on the floor which I think is slightly different to the mid season car Oh a quick one I forgot with the driver before he was clear coated So this is why I thought I had finished sanding, I found a very good forum for reference pictures which I took a long (about 2 hours and 230 pages worth) while looking through and I had this mad idea that I just went with and so far it's turning out ok. I CUT THE NOSE OFF Which was very hard and time consuming around these corners But it's worked ok now I just need to fill the gaps slowly with plastic sheet and make all the s-duct parts and steering parts but the good side of this is I will have steerable wheels on this which is not able with the standard kit. shood23
Thanks Ashley. So this build has now just taken a little bit of a turn in terms of importance with button semi retiring at the end of this season. Must have it done by the Mexico gp now. shood23
Small update for today Thus frontal section on the mp4/30 is causing me some real headaches as the area is so compact so I have been racking my brain trying to figure out the best way to go forward, this is where I am as of today, excuse the dodgy looking filler it hasn't been sanded back yet. You will see in most of the picture unsanded filler as today was filling day lol and the nose cone and finally for filling was the nasty gaps in the floor pan and moving on to a non filler job, I have made a start to the helmet decals Front and back thanks for looking More soon shaun

shood23
Thanks Roger these helmet decals are a real pain, I now know why I don't do drivers very often lol Shaun
shood23
Finally I have some progress on this build The helmet for the driver us now done but bits where the decals just didn't fit will need touching up after I seal the decals The side deflectors for this car are the wrong shape. They have alot of curved profile to them in the kit whereas on the real car for the late 2015 season they were basically just straight. It's given me a chance to finally try the tamiya 2 part epoxy putty stuff and I must say it's very good. I have also finished off the rear crash stucture/gearbox so now it's ready for the carbon to be added And finally the front bulkheads are now done, yes they still look a little rough but I need to get all the basics done before I can tart it up. I have added the steering rack though just so I can configure how and where the s-duct vents are going to go Hopefully very soon I can at least have some primer on the car Shaun
shood23
Some more progress for this build The drivers head has been almost finished, just need to put some details on the drivers face and paint the padding inside the helmet The floor pan has been painted in gloss black and is now ready for decals The carbon decals have been started on the gearbox/rear crash stucture And the side And finally for this update is the exhaust tip. It's a real metal bit from top studio so I treated it like a real metal exhaust when trying to add a little more realism by heating it up with a lighter on the very end, admittedly the picture was taken last night so it doesn't do the picture justice but you get the gist of how it looks lol More soon Shaun
Spookytooth
Nice work Shaun, what Gloss Black did you use? Simon.
shood23
Thanks Simon the gloss black is just a cheap brand from Wilkinsons, it's all having decals over the top so it's not going to be seen soon.  Today I finished off the rest of the exhaust parts but made sure not to put too much heat through as I just wanted it to match the most forward part of the rear part   And finally I made time to finish off the s-duct parts   And then got the 2 bits stuck on the car so no I can get some primer on the car   More soon  Shaun
Jake Moon
Nice scratchbuilding, you're much braver than me! The exhaust looks the business as well.
shood23
Thanks jake I'm glad I went for the exhaust mod if I'm being honest as it's much better and easier to work with than the kit part   So progress on this now  It's been a day of prepping the body/wing parts, basically anything that needs zeroa mclaren grey.  I'm also still working on the helmet  And have put the carbon decals on the floor pan, it's the same as last time they don't really fit 100%   I also got some primer on the modified side deflectors  And some primer on the car, so here's a few pictures of that   More soon  Shaun
shood23
Small progress on this build.  The main body part has been sanded back with micro mesh 4000 to take the high points off and fixed any dodgy bits and a final coat of primer has been put on.   The nose cone has been painted   The seat has also been put in primer   And the last few suspension bits have been primed to see those Damn sink holes better  More soon  Shaun
mostrich
This is some serious modelling you show here. You have an eye for the detail and the model shows that. I really like the pose of the boarding or deboarding pilot. That's the moment when the steering wheel lies on the front of the body, right?
