Alclad Polished aluminum

Recommended Posts

I'm getting ready to spray polished aluminum on a T-33A and was wondering if I should spray a base primer before laying down the gloss back or is this not necessary? Also, should I spray future over the gloss black before spraying the polished aluminum ?

Any help is always appreciated..

Thanks

Dave

Dave,

I think the Primer over the Black is OK as long as they are both Lacquer based.

Personally, I would be very weary of the Future before Alclad step - Lacquer over Acrylic is not to be recommended.

Like most things, a test piece is the way to go, however I've ruined a perfectly good (well not that great) model by applying a Lacquer finish over a previously 'Future'd' model.

I've read that the formula for applying should be - 1. Lacquer / 2. Enamel / 3. Acrylic.

Going any other way is risky and may resort to an empty tissue box :crying:

Hope this helps.. Dave.

You mentioned primer over the gloss black? Did you mean primer and then the gloss black followed by the alclad aluminum..

Thanks

Dave

Sorry Dave - yes. I kinda got this muddled up.

Primer, Gloss Black, Alclad.

Cheers and sorry for the confusion.

Primer under the gloss black is recommended, especially is you are using Alclad's Gloss Black Base, as I have experienced melting plastic with it previously. If you are using the high shine Alclads, make sure the gloss black is enamel based. Any of the standard alclads can be sprayed on standard acrylic gloss black without issue.

Hope this helps,

Tom.

I also suggest to let the gloss black dry completely and to polish it before you apply Alclad. It makes a real difference.

If you want to get different shades of Polished Aluminum you can do this quite simple: Do not just paint the complete area black but mix it with dark grey (or several dark greys). Then (after polishing) spray it over with the Alclad Polished Aluminum. The base coat shines through giving you Aluminum different hues.

I did so here:
