Mancunian airman
Started this the other day, straight forward but the real work will be in the detail, the Interior stanchions and the overhead gantry for the doors. I dont know how they will be constructed but its my intention to have thedoors movable to the open or closed position. Without further ado The material Only SIX pieces cut Initial glueing . . . ( I had to EdIt so the overall shape could be seen). Second photo shows my attempt to get it Square. After dinner, the same evening I started this, I apply some Grey primer so it could be better seen One has to be careful not to damage the Wing tips . . . A couple of 'test shots' taken yesterday . . . and the details for the stanchions. (Approx 40 needed) 20 x 40 thou pieces with 18 pieces making up each individual stanchions. Thats all for this weekend, thanks for looking in Ian Edited August 13, 2016 by Mancunian airman
Paul J
Best of luck with that! I;m sure it will work out fine and we;d all like to see the end result here. A long time ago, aound the early 1970s, there was a vac form kit of a blister hanger by Modakit! I started it but it never got finished, The zig zag in the hooped frame was supplied and made from plastic rod pre shaped. (The brown coloured rod) The edges of those frames had to be cut from a solid sheet in to very narrow strips with the cut lines embossed orpressed in to the plastic sheet and glued tothe edges of those zig zag pieces!!! I only ever managed to cut and make about four of these hooped frames. Getting the curves right was a nightmare and getting them to stick and stay in shape too was horror!. The company also did a control tower and nissen hut I recall. Does anyone else here recall these or have them in their stash????
TimB
Paul, I recall the blister hangar with horror. I "finished" it but the results were not good! To be honest, I must have been in my early teens but even now I would probably run away. Ian, back on topic - what references are you using for the T2? Regards Tim
bar side
I am sure I have seen a zig zag pre-made strip from one styrene strip maker but I can't find it now - might not be quite right but might save a lot of effort. Keep up the good work.
Mancunian airman
Ian, back on topic - what references are you using for the T2? Regards Tim Hi Tim apart from my own site visits with photos and measurements I also refer to this as it give you measurements . .. http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/20121026065214/www.mod.uk/NR/rdonlyres/80BF05BD-926E-40D3-9BD4-750FBF9CF556/0/fs16.pdf regards Ian

Mancunian airman
I have been working on the first set of 6 hangar doors tonight . . . On 3 of them I sprayed the back to try and make the visual more apparent. The black permanent marker, marked on the front of the doors hopefully when sprayed over, will be seen and create the framework of the doors themselves . . . .
Mancunian airman
Done a little more . . . I had a mirror cut yesterday to fit half way in the hangar. Shown as a temporary fit, hopefully it will give the impression that there are two aircraft in the hangar The mirror also acts as a roof support, hence the slight sag in this and subsequent photos, its been taken out until the internal bits are done the roof is taped in several places for the time being . . . The next photo is the back end that isn't very visible on the diorama hence the 6 doors will be closed I still have to carry out the internal construction and the door runners for both ends but this is how she looks after the spraying this afternoon . . Mancunian airman
I have finished the stanchions and I am half way through installing them in the T2 hangar . . . I am so pleased with the ease of this construction, using the Poly Carb sheeting, that I have started a second hangar of a different design. My diorama includes the pre-war civilian hangar to drawing number E/C/195/37 that was utilised by the RAF. Needless to say my first attempt at this type was rather bold and I started with an aluminium 'box' but I found difficulties with trying to fix plastic fixtures, girders etc and even the corrugated sheeting warped so it was put to one side pending a re-think . . . The two together. I will not be showing the construction of the second hangar but wanted to point out the use of the poly-carb sheet and what I consider to be good value for money for boxy type builds. I am looking forward to posting the results of the stanchions, mirror and door runners I think it looks OK

Mancunian airman
Moving nearer to completion How the inside looked before the spray I actually fixed the roof on today . . . I also made a false door front that I could put in place to protect the inside from any spray paint Not 100% about the colour, previous green was a shade darker I am on with the overhead door runners as I type . . . .

Mancunian airman
Many thanks Richard. I am on the look out for a suitable green, seems that there are not alot of Green cars according to the Halfords range. Mancunian airman
Its slow progress building the door runners. Obviously two set but this first serves as a guide for me and a practice for the 2nd, the opening end . . . Starting at one end to get the spacing right The runners . . . the overhead runners had bracing in place . . . Every T2 hangar had a rectangular bracket at each end . . . My attempt at such . . . thanks for looking in
Mancunian airman
I have made up the rectangular bracket(s) they are now in place; I shall place the runners over the closed doors in the next couple of days. I am not at home at the mo so cannot posts photos but they will be posted sooon . . . ... Currently only built the one set for one end, I shall start the second set next week and as they will be for the Open end of the hangar, its my intention to have them so they are movable. Okdoky
Each building a work of art and as a Building Surveyor I have a real appreciation for the effort you are putting in to each ! Are you considering any lighting to the interiors ? Nige
RichO
I like what you have done with the polly sheets. I went out to get some of the polly sheets for my build. Light and strong for "boxy" builds. Good Job!

Are you considering any lighting to the interiors ? Nige Nige As much as it may give the appearance that there is life in the building(s), you probably wouldn't see them on during the day and as soon as night set in, the Black outs would go up. Thanks for the interest shown. I like what you have done with the polly sheets. I went out to get some of the polly sheets for my build. Light and strong for "boxy" builds. Good Job! You may have to compromise on the size somewhere during the build, as you cut the Poly to a flat edge you will see what I mean. I went slightly smaller with certain measurements i.e. the hangar doors, 78 mm wide instead of the more accurate 80mm. Good luck and let us know what you will be building. rgds Ian
Mancunian airman
Good Morning Chaps As it stands this morning . . . making sure the runners are level . . . the very front has a vertical 'lip' that I shall glue down when the top piece has cured . . . Its rather wide so its difficult to get a good close up . . . From above . . . I have made a slight error but I'm not going to say as I think the hangar still looks the business. Next week I shall start the Open end door runners. Ian
bar side
Great to see the same attention to detail on a building as you would see on an aircraft. And in the context of the rest of the site you are building its looking great
