Spot of the day!

Recommended Posts

Today, in a village called Old Bolingbroke,

somewhere East of Horncastle, a pristine

Rover 3500 in white from around 1973.

There was a green Rover 2000 with a

caravan in tow yesterday in South Lincoln.

Waiting to pull out of the estate this morning, watched a lovely pale metallic green Citroen DS waft past.

I'd love to own a DS, one of my all time favourite cars.

Stunning little MGB GT in Alton yesterday, and on the way here, nice looking Porsche 928 on the back of a flatbed truck on the M4, then a lovely

Mk 1 Mini on the A34.Today in Camberley a large (very) red Yank tank (might have been a Ford Galaxie) filling up at  a Shell garage - don't think I'd want to pay for that..!!

I believe you're right! Just checked my photo and that looks like the reg (although I can't make out the last two characters on my photo).

Well spotted Hawkeye.

On the A34 on the way home today a black Mk1 Escort estate, on the M4 a VW Karmann Ghia convertible in bright blue with a red softtop which sounds awful but actually looked quite good - and probably the worst rain shower I've had to drive through in 43 years....!!!

Friday, went to the post office,  nice clean Ferrari F40 joining in with the pre-rush hour traffic, then a few minutes later saw a very tidy looking DB5 parked in one of the back streets.  Then this morning went outside to ding a Hyundai Coupe stuck in the hedge over the road.

A little later I saw something else that may be of some interest. Not being a car bod I don't know what it is. Is it an Austin?

Singer/Sunbeam Rapier. Airfix did a 1/32 kit about 1963ish.

70s flashback this afternoon on the M40, brown Austin Maxi on the back of a recovery truck.

All so familiar......

Karl

Yeah, the Airfix kit ought to have come with it's own recovery truck really...

Just had a look at howmanyleft.co.uk- only 146 Maxis of all flavours still registered. Only one Maxi HL 1750 auto still on the road. Wonder if the owner knows he's got the last one?!

Or to put it another way- only 146 left to go...

I have an Airfix Austin Maxi box. Not the kit though.

Probably worth a fortune nowadays.

Are there any left I wonder?

Probably more Austin Maxis around still than Airfix versions!

I know a gentleman with an Airfix Maxi. He will part with it for a sensible sum if anyone is interested.

I drove a 1750 HL Auto a few times. Unimpressed with the performance.

A Kubelwagen in desert colours on a transporter on the M25 today.

Also spotted an excellent case of Karma on the M25 this afternoon.

Woman driving for 3 junctions, all the while talking away animatedly on her mobile phone, held in her hand, barely focussing on her driving.

I gave her my best Paddington Bear stare as I repeatedly passed her in the traffic, to no effect.

Then just after the M4 junction, still chatting away, I watched her drift into the back of a 10 ton lorry, and crunch the front of her MPV, not that the the lorry noticed, as he just drove off.

She wasn't hurt, but the look on her face was a picture.

Sadly, I think the early manuals weren't much better with their cable gearshift! ‘It feels like stirring treacle with a long thin cane.’  The Maxi could have been an absolutely iconic British car if they had got it right. Imagine a sure-footed and nimble modern car, sporting an innovative hatchback and running an overhead cam engine with five speeds (topping out the range with a cooking 1750 twin-carb). The resulting car would have made a Renault 16 look like it belonged in a muddy field on the set of 'Allo 'Allo.

Sadly, a few years back when my daily commute involved a 80 mile round trip up the M4 I came to expect that at least once a week I would be late home because I'd get stuck behind a 'shunt'. Almost always a minor incident, but I tell you, when you pass someone who managed to wedge their car underneath a HGV at high speed it really reinforces why you'd never use your phone, eat pack of crisps, or light a fag at the wheel.

That said, I reckon the standard of driving on a British motorway at about 11am on a working day is about as good as it gets in the UK. Most business/professional drivers have very good situational awareness- they know all the unwritten the rules of motorway.
