Spot of the day!

Recommended Posts

The 205GTi had a wider front track than the standard 205, but retained the standard rear track. This meant that its handling could be "interesting" at times - especially if you lifted off in the middle of a corner. Round and round and round we go, and where we stop, nobody knows ... These days I have a 208GTi; after twelve months and almost 25,000 kms it's starting to loosen up and become even more appealing. It's the closest thing I've found to the original Mini Cooper S - lots of grunt, a wheel at each corner and not too much bodywork. Great fun and, as a bonus, a much better driving position than any Brick ever had!

What's the difference between an Mi16 motor & the 'normal' 205 1.9 GTi engine m ? The few times I drove a 205 Gti I mainly remember for the ridiculous lift off oversteer...!! :D

The 16v engine is up about 20BHP and 20 torques on the standard 1.9 GTI, and only about 20kg heavier -- the modified car weighs less than 900kg. Read all about it here:

best,

M.

So good looking too.  My brother's friend had a 1.9 version and that thing left my brains behind!  I have a Peugeot 206cc with the 2 litre engine and that is quick, but nowhere near as instant as the 205, which I imagine was also a light car.

Yes, this was a 16-still a mint condition classic car worth upwards of 13-15k on the market today I'd guess. Considering a new Fiesta ST or Polo GTi would cost you 18-20K depending on spec, and a fast Mini or Audi A1 getting to 25-27k now, I still think this might be a bargain if I was braver. I'm tempted. Really very very tempted...

Who needs dealer warranties, parking cameras, bluetooth and satnav anyway...?

Is that what they go for?  Jeez.  I wouldn't pay that or anywhere near, but then I wouldn't pay five figures for early Escorts. Tinny little rot boxes.. I wouldn't pay 8 gs for a Triumph Herald!  And I wouldn't give you a thankyou for a stupid little pile of Austin Ruby junk if it was left on my drive overnight!  But there we are....I'm no longer able to justify expense on anything much so I have no longer any interest in overpriced crap.  Whatever the market decides.

I once had a ride in a 250 GTO, yes, a real one. It was of course, beautiful and sounded heavenly, but it was also made appallingly badly, was full of misaligned (original) pop rivets, had brakes that had it squirming from one lane to another, doors that had to be held shut and God knows what else wrong with it.  Was it worth millions?  Of course not, but some flash punk would pay it, to hide it away somewhere and brag.  So what?  I got to ride in it and decide I wouldn't want one. You rich boy, you had to spend money finding out!

The car market, like the art market has just gone loopy.

In Boston this morning, a Y reg Granada (the square one)

in faded pale metallic blue looking all original.

Later in Lincoln, a lovely 30's Bentley in blue and

an Austin Healey, old English white, in rally trim.

On holiday in the Lake District:

An absolutely mint mid-green Mk1  Escort and a dark blue MGB GT coming back from Grasmere through Ambleside. There had been a country show in Grasmere that day.

A little later, another MGB, but this time in dark red and in 'racing' trim. (i.e. No bumpers).

A couple of days later, a whole gaggle of original 3-wheeled J.A.P.  powered Morgans, probably about 5 or six. I lost count. Saw two of them again in Keswick a few days later.

The Lake District is quite a honey-pot for classic cars and bikes.

I never seem to have my camera whenever I see these things... :(

Cheers, Alan.

In the car park at work on different days last week , 2  Mk 1 Mini Cooper S's - one Tartan Red , the other Almond Green .  The red one was utterly mint , the green one still very tidy , but a bit more used .

An immaculate Sioux XT236 on a low loader just by Cheshire Oaks turning off the A41.  Looking at the 'before' restoration pictures, the restorers had their work cut out.

Another couple of spots in the Lake District:

A Bell V-22 Osprey over Buttermere (also saw an Osprey on it's nest. A different kind of osprey...)

A Karmann Ghia on the road to Keswick from Ambleside.

Oh, and my son was woken up outside our lodge by a badger...

Cheers, Alan.
