M3/M4 Medium Tank STGB Chat

Recommended Posts

  • 2 weeks later...

Im thinking i might get in on this. I need to build two of the 4 Tanks my Grandfather crewed/Drove from his M3 training at Camp Pine in upstate New York, and in Kentucky in 1941-42. To the Training he did in the california and Texas Deserts with M4's. He also drove M4 tanks in the pacific theater with the 706th Tank Battalion in 44-45. His unit logs list M4 assault guns which i believe he told me were the M4/105 gun combinations. I need to build either the M3 cast hull or the M4/105 to finish out my collection of his 4 tanks. So I will build one of the two. The M4/105 is readily available. Im thinking of scratchbuilding the M3 cast hull as a personal challenge, unless Takom actually makes one. I Will decide by the time this starts.

If you read this Sgt, can you give me a very brief rundown of what is expected from someone who takes part in this STGB? I've signed up, but I just need to know a few of the basics; how many can/do we build, and what's all this about polls and voting? Do I post updates and photos of the build/s the same as I would in WIP thread?

Sorry for asking the B......g obvious, but I've never taken par in a GB before.

Thanks,

John.

Hello John, there’s no upper limit on how many you can do, I’m lucky to get one done, but if you can do more, then all the better.

When the GB is complete, all finished models go up for vote of best in GB.

Before the GB starts, this thread and new ones will be moved into the Current GB forum and from that point you can make your own thread/s and show what you will be making.  Once the start gun is fired, you can then post your progress just like a WiP.

There are rules that sometimes differ from GB to GB put they’ll be posted closer to the time to clarify any ambiguity.

Hope this helps.

Simon (failed in two STGBs already, desperate to get one complete in Radial Engines Rock though!)

That looks to be a Sherman III at a casual glance.....In the Gentlemens' Scale it pretty much has to be Heller these days, under half the price of Dragon's version, every bit as much detail, plus some very useful spares for future projects.

This kit seems to be selling out quite quickly, so if you spy one locally at a sensible price, grab it:

In 1/35 I'd expect Dragon or perhaps Tasca to be the way forward.....One of our resident 1/35 specialists will no doubt be able to point you toward the best kit in that scale.  B)

Got the Heller kit (79892) maybe a good reason to build it.

Yup, that's exactly the plan.....Build one (or more) Sherman(s), take photos & share.

Once the sub-forum is created all members of this thread (and others too IIRC) will be given access to open a build thread just as one would elsewhere.

Good luck with the GB chaps. I will be following along. 🙂

Why don't you join in Nige.....I'd be happy to sponsor you, so to speak, just let me know your preferred flavour and I'll sort it.

Would any of you chaps be willing to volunteer as co-hosts.....If we could get someone experienced with the various 1/48 Sherman kits and another person with 1/35 expertise we'd be pretty well covered.

I can give you a hosting hand sarge, as you've helped me out in other GBs.

Excellent.....Many thanks!  :coolio:

Thought I might draw the groups' attention to the proposed Panzer IV STGB.....We currently need just six more names to get another armour only GB thread opened up:

It's always nice for a Sherman to have a target!  ;)

Just spotted this GB and fancy a change from aircraft.

I have had a look at the stash and if I have done my homework correctly I think these should qualify as I believe they are all based on a M3 or M4 chassis.

I am pretty well versed on 1/35th Sherman's and all their variants if you need a hand with this group build. Never done anything like this before.
