M3/M4 Medium Tank STGB Chat

Count me in Sarge.

Youve prodded me many times regarding building a 21st century AFV kit, so here's the ideal opportunity :) .

I know nothing about which are the good or bad kits. Ideally I would like to do a New Zealand, Battle of Monte Cassino Sherman, something like this:

http://natlib.govt.nz/records/23220515?search[subject][]=Cassino&search[subject][]=Sherman+tank&search[il][subject]=Sherman+tank&search[path]=items

I have good friends in Cassino  and my wife is a Kiwi. I like to have a bit of a connection to things I build, so this ticks the boxes :) .

Any advice on a good kit/decals to buy in any scale from 1/72-1/35 most gratefully received.

That looks to be a Sherman III at a casual glance.....In the Gentlemens' Scale it pretty much has to be Heller these days, under half the price of Dragon's version, every bit as much detail, plus some very useful spares for future projects.

This kit seems to be selling out quite quickly, so if you spy one locally at a sensible price, grab it:

In 1/35 I'd expect Dragon or perhaps Tasca to be the way forward.....One of our resident 1/35 specialists will no doubt be able to point you toward the best kit in that scale.  B)

A lot depends on your preferred scale.....If you are interested in 1/72, I'd strongly recommend looking this site over, it has all the info you could ever need:  http://www.172shermans.com/

Plenty of time to choose.....Should I sign you up anyway?

I guarantee all the advice you could ever need will be forthcoming.  :coolio:

Well, I've just finished an M4A3, but what the heck! I can always find room for another Sherman. I've got a load of left over bits from Tamiya and Dragon and the intension is to build a Sherman 1. So I'm in.

Going with Sarge's suggestion of the Sherman III, initially was difficult to suggest a kit with all these particular characteristics in one box:

- T48 rubber chevron tracks

- Sherman III mid production hull

-three piece transmission housing

- wide gun mantlet

I'd go with  Dragon 6313.  The box art shows the narrow mantlet, but instructions reveal the wide one is on the sprues, see part B13

The tracks are a different type than those in the Kiwi photo, but if you want to go the aftermarket route, google lists about five different brands to choose from:

Thanks Sarge and Jack :)

The last AFV I built was a Sherman, the old Airfix kit in 1/72.

I also built their T-34 at the same time. I realise they are very outdated, but I enjoyed it.

Prior to that, around 1978 (age 12) it was the 1/35 Tamiya Tiger. Not wishing to sound immodest, I treasured it for years as somehow I did a very good job on it.

For this GB I'll go down the 1/35 route. I feel like having a big Sherman on display, and as it's NZ, SWMBO will like it.

Christmas is coming up so I'll do some online shoppping and send links to Mrs. Tiger and also the 14 year old young lady that is rumoured to live here too :) .

Best regards

TonyT

PS: It looks like parts MA12 and 6 and associated bits should be missed off? As a normally wingy thing person I would call them mudguards, which I know is probably cringeworthy and wrong  .

Hi Tony, mudguards is what I'd call them too - don't know if there a more technical name for them.  Most likely they were present when delivered to the unit.  Either battle damage or the crew removed them, maybe traveling through mud to free up the tracks?

For markings, check out Star Decals:

I was going to suggest some figures, as there are couple nice NZ crew sets  produced in your neck of the woods by AC Models (Andrew Cairns).  Maybe skip those, $25 per  figure - ouch!

regards,

Jack

Thanks Jack that's very kind :)

What a great decal set!

The Polish 'Scorpion' has some amazing things happening along the sides!

I would probably go for scheme 'A' as it has RAF roundels. It'll make me feel a bit more at home :D .

I am finding many great and equally terribly saddening pictures of NZ Shermans in Cassino.

The city was 99% destroyed; more death and destruction than Nagasaki.

I visited friends there in the late 90's and was very touched by how it is now called 'The city of peace'.

Monks from the rebuilt monastery and others tend graveyards for the fallen of all nationalities, from all sides of the terrible battles. :)

You going to add me to the list then Sarge??

Also, does it 'have' to be a Sherman? Or can it be on the M3/M4 chassis, I only ask cuz I do have a new box of Armourfast Achilles' in the stash. I'd have to buy a Sherman if the rules are strict
