1:144 Airfix 737-200 OOB

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

So this is a couple of firsts for me, I've never done an airliner before and I've never took part in a group build. So I'm going to keep this as simple as possible and do the kit straight out of the box. If anyone has some wisdom for a newbie please please share it with me!

First few photos of the build. I got the kit secondhand for a reasonable £7 at Midland expo last Sunday.

So lets first have a look what is inside the box.

Not much by the looks of it, so it should be a nice simple straightforward build, well fingers crossed!

Traditional Airfix style instructions, with only 5 steps.

Two livery options, a classic British Airways and an Air France. I'm not sure which one I will do yet, I think the Air France as it's all over white and therefore no masking required.

Overview of the spures, hardly any flash which I'm impressed about being the kit is pretty old. The plastic seems nice, not the horrible soft stuff that Airfix has got me used to.

So all in all quite impressed by the kit on first inspection, now it's time to give it a quick wash before getting some glue on it and putting it together.

So first of all I got the doors all closed up after some dry fitting as they only seem to fit well in one way. Then we got some glue out and joined the two fuselage halves together.

Got some filler along the joints, and started a bit of a sanding fest, I would love to get a nice smooth glossy finish on this aircraft, so surface prep is key. I think that is where I am going to spending most of my time.

I'll put a coat of primer on to try and pick up any imperfections. Then fill and sand those, then look at the wings and tailplane.

Looks good! Just one thing, all the photos from your second post (the one where you show the box and sprues and instructions etc) have disappeared...

I have done some tidying up on photbucket, I guess the links needed updating, I hope it works now.

1/144th, not 1/72nd as the title suggests...

Doh silly me, guessing wishful thinking, I've changed the title. And thanks for pointing it out!

Got some work done on the kit. It's proving to be bit of a filler monster, especially around the lower fuselage. Anyway here are some photos.

The jet engines are not the nicest, however for a first attempt at an airline I don't know if I want to spend extra money on aftermarket. I think I'll paint them up and see what they look like as a dry fit before deciding.

Next step is to get the fuselage joints and wing joints as smooth as possible. Then paint the cockpit black, no one is going to see anything through the windscreen anyway. Then prime the plane and get some paint on it.

I just caught up with this. I'm also not experienced with airliners, and building an Airfix OOB of a very similar vintage ( the DC-9).

This one is coming along nicely; it seems these Airfix 1/144 airliners can be a lot of fun and give very nice results.

Looking forward to seeing your paint scheme :)

Best regards

Tony

Further update on the little 737, so far I'm really enjoying the build. It is very refreshing to be doing something different to the usual 1/72 jets.

All primed up almost ready for paint now:

Also painted the engines with Vallejo Metal Colour:

Very nice smooth finish on the primer Neal. It looks like the paint will go on very nicely. It really looks the part. What paint did you use on the engines (looks good)?

Best regards

Hi Tony,

I sprayed them with vallejo metal colour dark aluminum, then buffed up with a old cloth. Rather like the effect, I think I'm going to try and weather them slightly where the thrust reverser cans are.

It's an old and rather basic kit, but you've done a good job on it so far. It does go together easily but also offers scope for little enhancements along the way.

Looking forward to seeing it in Air France colours. And at £7, that was a good bargain!!

Finally got some time to sit at the bench and spray some paint, first of all I sprayed the wings with Vallejo Model Air 71.051 Barley Grey, then I masked them up to paint the fuselage. For this I sprayed Tamiya XF2, I'll then polish this up with a buffer stick before coating it with some klear.

Here she is in the spray booth.

I've got some Klear onto the model, I'm going to seal all the paint laid down so far, then I'll mask up for the metallic paints on the wings and the tail fin.

Still really enjoying this build. I need some advice though. Should I put on the decals and then gloss coat again and then fill the windows with Krystal Klear glue? Or should I do the windows first, then decal and finally gloss coat?
