Don149
The Brig is HMS Mars, formerly a Dutch privateer, the ship rigged sloop is HMS Fly(insect or motion?). Both in 1/64th scale.

alex
very nice! Are they made from a "kit", or are they full scratch? Alex
Don149
Both plank on frame kits, the Mars from Caldercraft and the Fly from Victory Models. I would love to build VMs HMS Vanguard but at over £600 Im a bit hesitant ! Sorry Banzaiduke, no close ups, while all that rigging is no problem, posting the pics is. I have to rely on my grandson in law visiting, he works in IT and has it all at his fingertips, you might say!. On the shopfloor at the moment is SHs new Tempest.

Jockster
Absolutely beautiful both of them, nice with the tallowed hulls too, I like coppered but the white looks so much brighter and cleaner!

Don149
Jock, in the reading on these two, they were coated in "the white stuff",not coppered. though I don't know what that compound was.Does anyone out there know?.
SUB-SAM
Jock, in the reading on these two, they were coated in "the white stuff",not coppered. though I don't know what that compound was.Does anyone out there know?. There were all sorts of compositions. But a lot of records of tallow mixed with white lead (lead oxide), china clay etc and also whale oil (hard head oils similar to tallow), tree resins etc. I think various shades of 'off white' are good representations of this, perhaps painted in a way that you can see the shade of the wood underneath in patches, as it wouldn't have the same 'white out' properties of a brilliant white paint, that use titanium dioxide. GrantGoodale
Regarding "the white stuff", I started a thread over on another board that turned up some interesting information: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/13410-carolines-bottom/
foxy
Lovely builds Don. Will have to have another go at a plank on plank small brig or cutter sometime, maybe a through deck Brig.. Must admit for my first foray into wood ships its been a real fun experience. SHs new tempest, 'whats that'. I would never get to your standard. foxy

Don149
Stay with it Foxy, Im only an average ship builder, only done four!. The SH Tempest is a WW 2 RAF fighter in 1/32nd scale, my main hobby. Needs quite a bit of surgery to make a decent model!. Thanks Grant and Sam, thank goodness for Humbrol satin white!. goggsy
Impressive, that's one hell of a cats cradle of rigging. Some real skill there I think.
