Summer in the Gentleman's scale.

Recommended Posts

Morning folk,s,I have been building in 1/48 scale for most of the last year with the odd 1/72 build here and there.I want to get

back into the scale I grew up with for a few builds spurred on by a few cheapies from Home Bargains in the form of a couple

of Typhoon and Hurricane kit's.I have a few of the Hurricane kits in the collection and built one of the new tool Typhoons last

year so AM decals were needed as I,ve covered all the kit options especially with the Hurricane.I have Hannant,s D-Day sheet

on order which not only gives me a couple of fully striped Typhoon schemes but also a Swordfish scheme and some other tasty

Spitfire and Mustang schemes for the future. The Hurricanes will be in a couple of RAF schemes from the battle of France era

which have paint masked codes which should be interesting. The Swordfish also wears stripes in a mainly white scheme so over summer at least five kits are planned.

First up a start on the Typhoons which despite the open gun bay option I am building closed up.DSCN3390_zpssd6nug9o.jpg

Lovely crisp molding and detail on the sprues.

The Swordfish as you might expect is the Matchbox oldie

Those were the days!

Thanks for looking in, Decals should arrive tomorrow so I,ll post some pics then.

..lucky man! my local HB only had the Comet kit on the shelves. Still at £2.99 it would have been churlish not to..

Many thank's folks here,s the D-Day sheet on order as you can see there are some excellent schemes for future builds especially Spitfire,Hurricane

and Mustang.http://www.hyperscale.com/2014/reviews/decals/x72194reviewbg_1.htm.

Looking at the Swordfish the coaming aft of the pilots seat will need to be cut off as I did on last years build of this kit glad to see her

Rocket armed as the kit supplies this option.

Morning folk's progress over the last few sessions has concentrated on the interiors of the Typhoons and Swordfish.the latter has a very basic

layout so I tinkered with some scratchbuilding to give it a busy look once closed up this was to add an instrument panel replace the seat add a

couple of seats for the crew and a bit of internal ribbing which needs painting.

The Typhoon,s have all the detail most would want so paint and dry brushing are all you need.

Steve what interior green is that?

It's probably my tablet screen but I get a greyish cast to it where my idea of interior green is 'green-er'

I'm asking because I has a future project in mind which calls for a similar hue. ;)

Hi Perdu, its Tamiya olive based but mixed with a couple of other colours as I never use a dedicated interior green from any manufacturer, trouble is

I have to use the enhance option on windows as my new camera is not as sharp as the old Samsung so colours look way off depending on the light.

Decals arrived for the Hurricane's I had not realised there were upper wing roundels for only one aircraft,I will struggle to find spares in my box I may

have to seek out Troy to see if the codes can be used with later roundels.

DSCN3411_zpsdop87cha.jpg

Sorry should have mentioned the roundels are much smaller than we are used to seeing on Hurricanes normal sized ones I,ve

got loads.

Hmm, can you advise the actual diameter on the decal sheet Steve

I'll have delve into my transfers through the ages pack, see if there's any similar old Hurri ones about in there

This looks like it will be a great follow Steve! Great idea for the summer.

I LOVE the look of the d-day sheet, pink spitfire! blue mustang! And a white hurricane!! Worth it just for those three, let a lone the spitfires and tiffies..... Next year I need to build that whole sheet, especially as it's the daughters birthday 5th June and she loves pink spitfires....

Sorry back to your build...

Thank's Rob,my thoughts exactly when I saw the sheet,Airfix newer tool MKix and Academy P51c's dirt cheap and minimal work to make the PR so

they will definitely be getting built.

My 6 year old daughter loves pink Spitfires too, and of course she rifles my stash for ones for 'her' (read me) to build. Sigh, also her yellow and blue T-6G, her red Me 163 (with powder blue towing tractor, and her.......

Anyway, I'll be watching with interest as I have plans for my Tiffies (old mould Airfix and Heller) and Stringbag (Revell) and am always inspired by the builds on BM!

Morning folks.not much done over the weekend other than this project the stringbag is on her feet and ready for a touch of primer due to the scheme

it will be a matter of painting the top wing and main assembly separate from each other,

DSCN3414_zpsbyuxpijg.jpg

And the Typhoons have progressed after the internals were fitted,It might be just me but I find some of Airfix's new tools a bit poorer in fit and

"feel" after a couple of years production I certainly cant remember the massive gap on(both) port wings from my build of this kit on release.Still

not a major issue flexi filler.

Hi Steve. All projects looking good. I haven't built the Typhoon kit for a couple of years but I remember I needed filler on both wing root joints. I think these new tool kits are mostly pretty good but with the odd......'difficult' bit! My current Fw190 has certainly been a bit of a challenge in places and I know yours was!

Kind regards,

Stix
