HMS-Bella 1/60 scale Wood ship.

Recommended Posts

Thanks Julian.

Not a silly question, but take a look further up on the build and you will see four heads in place.

I made a mistake on the F shrouds and did them the wrong way round, also had to remove the for'd lower shrouds and start again.

So today was spent in putting back the lower shrouds,('good practice they tell me').

I will be doing the F shrouds an other way, ' should have studded how others did it first',

Also had a go today with the bow sprit ropes, will be adding a yard to this area too.

Thanks for looking in.

Missed that first time around, looks good, dismal place to read the paper on a stormy night though wasn't it :analintruder:

Superb work as always Foxy.

You must have had a couple of tea breaks as I have managed to catch up with you. Also sure you will do a good job on the rework.

Cheers Guy

Cheers beefy,Julian and Guy matey's.

Well a little slower right now, what with this lovely weather down here and other things to do, but its progressing well now.

Fitted out the sprit mast with blocks and sprit yard.

DSCF7421_zpshecto08o.jpg

Added the stay open and closed heart blocks.

DSCF7420_zps2svhk9et.jpg

Added brass railings to the poop deck.

DSCF7430_zpso1gkx2kh.jpg
Note Carranades now in position.
Added stay's to fore and main masts, so a little progress.

DSCF7433_zpss48vrudz.jpg

Next it has to be the upper shrouds and the F shroud.

Cheers beefy mate.

Yep its coming together nicely now, only had one' hicup' so far.!!!!

Well with a view of spraying the hull white.
First I had to prepare the wood, for this I have coated with wood filler, left to dry and sanded, then another coat.

DSCF7435_zps5cyr76mw.jpg

Once again sanded down and painted a coat of Klear to seal.

Hi Foxy

The filler looks quite good in places and from the picture gives a weathered effect of white paint. Looks like you are also back upto your usual pace.

Cheers guy's, yes the filler was to take out any gaps.

Seemed to work ok.

So with three coats of paint its starting to take shape.

Working on yards/boats and other smaller parts.

Blackened the bow and tops.

Hi Foxy, I've just reviewed all your posts and must say you're doing an excellent job. It's a real beauty! Now you start seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Nothing compared to that feeling, right? ;)

Only just noticed this build, so have a quick catch up now.

Very good work, quite fast too, and starting to look pretty impressive in the last few photos. How does this compare with building the 'Victory'? presumably similar techniques and skills, but less quantity?

Thanks guy's.

You are right Jasico, its a nice feeling when you know the end is in site.

Thanks Rob mate.

Your not far off, but working with wood is so different from plastic, but am using all sorts of material for this one, including plastic.

Wood seems more forgiving.

Thanks for taking the time to look in.

Thanks Julian mate.

Seems better with the white on her hull.

Been umming and arring about what size rope for the F shrouds, decided to do 3mm and the rat lines .2mm all black(tared).

First fitted to the F rod.

DSCF7454_zpskdqnkmyk.jpg
Tried it the other way round and it turned out to bulky around the tie ups.

Then fitted the DE in and attached the hook, then threaded the rope through and siezed.

Did one side and then had a break, will show pictures soon of the finish.

I also finished the two boats, one for the stern davit and one to go over the grating on deck.

DSCF7449_zpsvotgsh70.jpg

Added eyelets to the grating to secure boat, loose fitted at the moment, till rigging ropes done on the bits.

DSCF7450_zpsutwjqbxp.jpg
Just a mast to lay in the boat.

Hi Foxy

The paint job looks really nice. Great boats as well. The rigging looks like a real challenge. I need to get a book and I'm being inspired to find out more about these type of ships. it is like a whole new language.

Top stuff as always

Cheers

Guy

Hi Guy and thanks mate.

The best book I have found is the hardback=Rigging period ship models by Lennarth Petersson.

This gives you an in depth look at different types of rigging ships, the main ship used is a frigate which in my view gives an all round picture weather your building a Brig or a first line ship.

Most types of rigging i have found is the same for most types but only varies with size and sail types. This book is on square rigged ships.

Well after all that nattering, back to the Bella.

Finished the F Shrouds and started the upper shrouds.

Used brass for the F stave as the wood was to little and breaking under the strain.

DSCF7465_zpsjnnpzxr7.jpg

Quite fiddly a job was this, so a bit of cursing is ness.

DSCF7468_zpsohstksrp.jpg

Threading the ropes through the deadeye's went with out a hitch.

So then it was on to the stay's and jib stays.

This again is very fiddly.
Made up a jig for the seizing up of the fore topmast and preventer stay.

DSCF7485_zpsazjmccvm.jpg

Bent some brass for this to give me the distance needed.

Had to move the pin rails and reduced to four belaying pin holds, but only need two so far.

DSCF7487_zpsyfefkyz0.jpg

Overall picture of the Jibstay,Fore Topgallant,Flying Jib and Royal stay.

DSCF7489_zpsjvtembnj.jpg
Using black thread for the main stay's and hemp for the jib etc.

Thanks for looking in.

Hi Paul.

Thanks mate.

Have you tried Cornwall model boats, they do a great selection.

Well moved on and started the yards.

Having prepared the yard earlier it was time to raise the main yard.

DSCF7491_zpsu9lpn0hj.jpg

DSCF7492_zpszp8mrrqk.jpg

Added block and tackle and seized the yard to the mast.

Well managed to get all four, main and fore yards up, just the top yards to do.

Beginning to get complicated now.

DSCF7498_zpsxdkp7r32.jpg

DSCF7499_zpsng7eim6p.jpg

Maybe I am trying to get to near the real thing with all these blocks etc, but am enjoying it so much.

My next projected work is finishing Victory even though i have another wood ship to build.(proper one this time)

Cheers folks for all your nice comments.

As for next project Geoff, it has to be Victory to finish.

But am really stoned by these smaller wood craft.

For this build its the rat lines!!!!next, then I can tie down the royals and get to some idea of finish.

Thanks again folks for all your Interest and comments.

Cheers Dan mate..

Well the ratlines are taking time to do, so in between them I have been looking at some different Carronades for this ship.

Settled' I think', on some 18 Pdr Carronades, just waiting for Cornwall model boats to send a sample.

But in the mean time I have also got two sets of the 12 Pdr carronades for my next wood  build.

Could not resist a go at two of them.

DSCF7508_zpspk58yetf.jpg

DSCF7506_zpsnietagzi.jpg

Added some extra's.

Thanks Dan,Beefy,Bugle07 and many others for your Interest.

Again its a change of direction on this build, by removing the 32 Carronades and replacing with 18 Pdr carronades.

Also have most of the ratlines inplace.

Picture shows the empty space and I have added planking to the gun apertures.

DSCF7515_zpsyqrlgifo.jpg

next I fitted the shroud cleats to the upper shrouds to tie off the top yards.

DSCF7518_zpsk6dltt5s.jpg

These are Dafis etchings,(some usefull etchings still for larger ships).

Like the eyelets etc.

Tied down both Gaff booms till ropes attached to stop them flapping about.

I then looked to the bows and have added scrolls etc, these will be painted gold and black.

So first the gold.

DSCF7512_zpsuz6tdwki.jpg

This needs doing before anchors can be put in place.

An overall picture of the build up to date.

DSCF7509_zpsdf8vwgx0.jpg

Once I have all the carronades it will not be long to finish the rigging/flag.

I also need to sort out a brass name plate for the base.
