Phantom FG.1 1/48 Hasegawa

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Working through my stash and building as many different British Phantoms as I can justify here is my latest effort.

Can you guess which one it will be yet?

No idea, but I see Hasegawa are to reissue this model, will be on my want list as can't see Academy doing one soon

I saw the re-issue rumour too.

Must say part of me wants to see someone do a new tool. But really the Hasegawa kit is so good the only thing I would want to see improved are full depth intakes.

Hello At Sea!

This will be very interesting! FG.1 is also one of my favorite aircraft. Do you use the kit's seats or some aftermarket parts? I used Aires seats; they are absolutely beautiful.

I completed my FG.1 a couple of months ago and I used Milliput, Plasticard and SU-24 surplus tanks to build the intakes. Then a fellow modeller pointed out that Alley Cat provides resin intakes for the Hasegawa kit...

BR,

Antti

I am building the kit seats with the eduard etch belts, but also have a set of quickboost seats.

Not sure which will go in yet. Or if the cockpits are to be open or closed, if closed the 2nd best looking seats will be used.

If a little limited in colour schemes.

Four schemes were worn by XT597 by my count.

1) Standard Royal Navy EDSG over White, Royal Navy on spine forward of tail, sea trials on USS Saratoga and HMS Eagle.

2) Standard Royal Navy EDSG over White, A&AEE on spine forward of tail, doppler nose and red tail and wing tips. (Or camo FGR.2 wing tips circa 1982)

3) Rasberry ripple A&AEE scheme.

4) as above but with 25th anniversary markings.

Less limited than most F-4K's!

And don't forget black mike!

However, most individual FG.1 airframes only wore 2 or 3 schemes during their lives, RN, Tactical grey green, Low Vis Barley grey.

So I'll call it a draw. ;-)

Looking forward to this.

I have the Allcock & Browne version in the stash, and have slowly been collecting resin and etch etc.

Didn't know Alley Cat did resin seamless intakes, must add them to the wish list

An honourable conclusion sir! I suppose a current condition diorama would add another to your list.

I went for the Quickboost seats and closed canopy in the end.

Kit standard cockpit otherwise, painted by my own hand with a hairy stick.

Tried pre-shading for the first time...

My first real outing with a dual action airbrush, a Neo for Iwata, Tamiya acrylic thinned 50-50 with water.

The white is Halfords white primer, above and below the pre-shading.

Topsides tomorrow.

Ok. Wait. What is that nose all about? Youre marginally beating me in the Toom stash and I need to know more!

Looking well so far, but Im lost regards that nose.

XT597 was used by A&AEE and the trials for development of the Decca Doppler type 72 radar. This feeds exact speed and direction information to the nav computer. It was used in the Tornado GR.1 and the Sea Harrier as far as I know.

The bulge under the nose carried the ground scan doppler radar Tx/Rx pack and remained after the trials finished as the aircraft was in use as a calibration airframe and real time Cog / Sog input would have been useful.
