Hey Guys,

You found my Javelin. Thank you for your kind comments:)

The story about the "crashed" Indonesian C-130 remains a mystery. It is told in every book about Javelins although a slightly different version each time. I'm not sure was it Napier who wrote that this never happened. At least one Javelin returned to Tengah after a night time scramble without it's missiles and missile shoes. no explanation was given...

Kind Regards,

Antti

Napier doesn't really go into any details other than to say that a Javelin was scrambled and the C130 turned back the way it came.

Keep up the good work Antti.

Ah cool! Do you by any chance have the serial on that C-13= - guess it is not mentioned?

Must have been nasty for the back to punch out twice, back in the days...

No serial number mentioned, I'm not sure the Javelin even got that close to see the Herc.

I guess that'll be why Flt Lt Rawcliffe ended up as aircrew in Shackletons by the time I was in the RAF with his son. The 1/48 scale Airfix EE Lightning F1A kit has the exact aircraft he 'parked' near RAF Leuchars on the box-art (all be it when it was with another Squadron). I've thought of doing that and his Javelin as a mini-series theme at some point.

Hello Duncan,

then it was "the other" Javelin book...;)

The story about a Javelin returning from a scramble mission without missiles and missile shoes hints that "someone" pressed "inadvertently" the "empty the wing pylons" button. Or there was a malfunction (remember the humidity in Singapore). But then again a competent ground crew would have realized this...

Kind Regards,

Antti

Googled this   September 3, 1964: C-130B T-1307 of the Indonesian Air Force and operated by 31 Squadron crashed into the Straits of Malacca whilst evading interception by a Royal Air Force Javelin FAW.9 of 60 Squadron from RAF Tengah. This was the first non-U.S. Hercules hull loss.

Fabulous informative build for anybody building a Gloster Javelin kit.
