1/72 Italeri DUKW

Recommended Posts

I've some reservations about exposing my ineptitude on a large stage but as I do it with my bass guitar regularly enough - well why not. I chose this for a WiP because I thought it would be the easiest option, time will tell. The kit was picked up from Salisbury IPMS about 7-8 years ago and has lain dormant since my son lost interest in modelling.

First up the box

The sprues, instructions and stuff

It will be brush painting all the way for me, all advice, criticism, rambling nonsense will be happily received.

Plastic buffoonery is welcome here, I do it regularly. Nice subject you have chosen.

Well, don't say you didn't ask for it. Build stuff to follow shortly

Ok then, I decided to go for the Normandy landing scheme as it looked straightforward enough. I managed to get the main structure together without too much cursing and after one coat of sloppily applied primer and I got to this point.

I put on a coat of US Olive Drab (Vallejo) but I think this is too dark now. Off to the model shop tomorrow for something more suitable - I think Maroon Brown* is the right one.

*Brown Violet was the one I was thinking of, must be the new medication. Anyhow I'm going to stick with the US Olive Drab and try and shade/weather it.

Small update (no pictures yet). Most of the painting of the small stuff has been completed and I'm just about ready to glue everything together. A couple of problems have arisen so far, it would have been better to remove the moulded tools and I missed a mass of ejector pin marks - must have had the wrong glasses on when I checked for them...or something.

After assembly the next step will be weathering, I'm thinking that this should be a mix of rust and Normandy geology (chalk?). I have watercolours, oils and chalk pastels available, any pointers will be gratefully received.

It's generally worth lightening out of the pot colours to allow for 'scale effect'.....For OD in 1/72 I typically use Tamiya XF-62 Olive Drab lightened up to 40% with XF-60 Dark Yellow and/or XF-57 Buff depending on the amount of fading I want to represent. :nerd:

At present this is always applied with an airbrush.....I haven't yet summoned up the courage to try brushing Tamiyas again, even with their own retarder on hand.

It's coming along nicely, your olive drab looks good.

Thanks for the encouragement,I'll crack on with some more tomorrow.

I hadn't considered the effect of scale so I'll ponder what you've said. I might give it a go round the sides of the hull and see how it turns out. Thanks for the tip. Edited by Avereda

A bit more progress and on with some of the fiddly bits today. Looks a bit messy because I tried out some Citadel washes today having discovered that Salisbury has a Games Workshop. I'm still pondering whether or not to follow Sgt Squarehead's advice and lighten the basecoat - mainly due to the thickness of the existing paint layers. Anyhow here's a photo before this goes flying out of the window...this damned heat.

Can I recommend you take a look at some of 'Plastix' build threads.....He's the local master of painting braille armour with a brush. He's also a damned fine fellow and I'm sure he'd be more than willing to advise you. :coolio:

He is indeed the master, I think part of my problem was not appreciating the difference between 1/72 & 1/48. Not to worry though - all part of the learning curve.

A couple of photos for a quick update before I'm off to the Highlands for a break. I took Sgt Squarehead's advice and lightened the olive drab so things have moved slightly forward. One backward step was knocking off the deflector shield thingy from the front, the wheels and chassis are assembled but not fixed.

Back from the sunny, fertile plains of the Tarbat peninsular and on we go. Some of the previous work has been undone as I have moved into the messing things up part of this process.

First up I realised that the front wheels aren't a sub-assembly as such so they've had to be reworked. Secondly, I've broken one of the attachment points for the breadbaskety things so I've had to have a rethink - I hadn't really understood how they worked anyway so this probably isn't such a bad thing. The prop and prop arm have also been on and off again.

This has led me to consider either aftermarket (Eduard PE or possibly MR Modellbau's splendid upgrade) or some scratch building - both things I swore I'd never get involved with.

Rear wheel assembly with pencil highlighting - I like this in the flesh. Wheels still not fixed yet.

Good progress, you seem to be getting to grips with the kits various foibles. :coolio:

As for etch & aftermarket, I too swore I'd never touch them.....But it didn't last. :fraidnot:

If you want to try a reasonably priced AFV kit that can look amazing out of the box, have a look at the Revell 1/72 Tiger II Ausf B (Production Turret):

revell-1.72-03129-wwii-german-tiger-ii-a

OOTB this kit has almost no vices, but when you get around to building the tracks, DO NOT FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS.....PM me and I'll send (or post) some photos of how they are supposed to fit together. :nerd:

If you want to go beserk there are plenty of etch & resin sets out there for this kit, but make sure you choose one with replacement parts for the big vents behind the turret, the treadplate-like plastic parts are the only significant issue that I can think of with this lovely little kit. :pipe:

Their panzer iv, stuk iii and merkava are also pretty good

Yup all good recommendations, but the schurzen can be a bit of a pain on the former pair until you are used to them.....The Kingtiger is my go-to recommendation for a decent OOTB Braille build, if all our kits were to something like this standard we'd all be happy, even the aftermarket guys.

My first build on my 'return' to the hobby was the Revell Pz.III (IIRC).....The schurzen nearly killed my confidence!

My only encounter with schürzen was on revells panzer iv (and with the attachments on the stuk iii)

It was ... Ehm ... Ok :S

I think we're just hijacking this thread
