B-24 Liberator B VI - Airfix 1/72

Recommended Posts

With two weeks before my holiday I wanted something straightforward so I've pulled this from the stash:

109409-10000-pristine.jpg

According to Scalemates a new tool - in 1963 :)

Keeping to my WWII Europe theme I'll be (hopefully) finishing this one as "Kentucky Belle" which flew from Bungay, Suffolk in 1944.

The sprues are old Airfix but I guess I should do some shots:

A few loose bits but the bag was sealed so fingers crossed. And crew look! Also clear parts. Lots of clear parts:

I don't have a masking set :weep:

Hopefully this will be fun. Hopefully

No signs of mile-wide panel trenches (just ship-sized proud rivets)! Your lovely Spit MkXIX paint job showed them up a treat (?) in your previous lightning-build. Will be following with interest - especially to see if you can make the 2-week deadline (no pressure at at, at all, of course ;)).

This is a proper kit. I never had this one, always wanted it. It's huge, it's got guns that go up and down and props that go round and it's....going.....to be..... great fun :)

Just wondering what happened to you Ced as haven't seen a build in a while then a quick search and find this one.

Built this back in my youth.

Nice B)

Looking forward to this one Ced; I've got the Eduard (Academy) B-24D in the stash :)

I don't know of any masks for the Airfix Lib; Eduard do one for the Academy kit and the Hasegawas. I don't know that either would be any use but they might be better than nothing... unless you particularly wanted to build up your home-masking skills?

Anyway - happy building

Cheers,

Stew

Good luck de riveting! Never built this one as I was never brave enough.

As for masking, have you thought of not bothering, but instead using silver transfer striping and then sealing it in with Kleer?

Don't know if this is practicable, as this would depend on way the canopy frames were depicted.

A 1/72 B-24, sign me up Ced.

Hi Cookie and welcome!

Hi Alex - there's only 15 steps in the instructions (see below) so I should be able to bash this one together?

Thanks Tony - I'm not promising anything will move after I've spilled glue all over it - ah, the old days...

Hi Phil :) Did you miss the PR Spitfires? That camouflage must be working!

Nice B)

Hi Stew, glad to have you along. I've checked the clear parts this morning and (gulp) I think they should be, er, fun?

I'm definitely in, can't believe that something this size qualifies as a 2 week build, Ced. I know it's not the most complex of kits, but it just feels like there should be more sprues in the box.

Hi Chris and welcome - hopefully I'm not missing anything and can bash it pretty quickly.

A trip down memory lane here. Watching with interest.

Hi Mark and welcome.

Hello, of course I'm in. And for nostalgic reasons this: http://s1164.photobucket.com/user/bbudde1/media/liberator_zpstxjqpxgh.jpg.html

and that: http://s1164.photobucket.com/user/bbudde1/media/2006AF3214_jpg_l_zpsv489qhrl.jpg.html

Hi Benedikt - nice box art and I hope I can get close. My chosen scheme is NMF (I think) so should be more fun with the AK True Metal.

Good luck de riveting! Never built this one as I was never brave enough.

Trevor! You were never brave enough? Oh dear, that worries me

I'm listening to Tim Vine's chat show in the background so apologies if I seem to be shaking as I post - he cracks me up. Some chicken jokes:

- I bought a chicken-proof lawn; it's impeccable

- This chicken came up to me and said "I can't find my eggs". I said "You must have mis-laid 'em"

Boom boom tish. I have to listen to these at least twice to catch all the quick one-liners.

Fifteen step instructions:

They're fading a bit. Rivets? I don't do rivets but these look OK?

First job is to get the eight crew painted:

28036964400_5f41791dff.jpg

Oxygen masks. Hmmm. I'll aim for something olive drab with brown leather for the pilots.

Masking? I think I will be developing my skills. I'd assumed I could use my normal Paul Budzik technique of burnishing down tape over the frame and cutting with a sharp blade:

28036994260_a1aeaae689.jpg

Um... not then. Perhaps I'll finally get to use this:

27702646654_fa17c5464b_n.jpg

which I bought after watching Paul's video. Perhaps I can just burnish it on and cut it, leaving the frame?

Right, I'd better get on with it!

It has working undercarriage and control surfaces too. Not as good as Monograms bomb dropping dauntless though.

Hello Ced. I got this bare metal foil ( Revell?) and you have to be very careful with it. It's super thin with a good risk of tearing and and the adhesive is not strong. I would put very thin white glue on frames to get it fixed better. But yo have to try, if it suits you.

To get to the weird guys house!

Knock knock...

Who's there?

Chicken.... ah ha!..... Ok I'll get my coat.....

Hi John - er, I'm not sure i'll have time to fit the hydraulics and a first look at the nose wheel doors is making me think, er, not working.

Looking forward to this Ced, especially after seeing the results of your last spitfire build.

Matt

Thanks Matt and welcome

Hi Benedikt. The Bare Metal Foil is from the Bare Metal Foil Co of Michigan (I wonder what they specialise in?) and, at £6 a sheet, it had better be good. I mean, that like, ooo, €7 at current exchange rates (glum). Having said that we made £34 on a refund during the current 'problems' so I'm not complaining!

I'll be tagging along, if I may.

Welcome Simon, glad to have you along.

 Welcome Leon

Why did the chicken crossed the road? To die in the rain. (Ernest Hemmingway)

Ooo, deep...

This is going to be great!

Welcome Dermot - I hope I can live up to your expectations!

But it's not looking that good. On the assumption that the multi-stage crew painting is going to be slower that assembling the internals I've cut these guys off the runners:

27708280834_11507b99e4_z.jpg

Eight crew members. Well, six and two halves. I spent about an hour cleaning these up with a molding flash sander and Micromesh sticks and had a growing sense of, well, not spending my time wisely :deadhorse:

28290877946_292a3621c0_z.jpg

Two cabin stewards with trays and two pilots, all with high-altitude pressure discs in their suits - or are they ejector marks? :hmmm:

It also looks like one of the pilots is a relative of Joseph Merrick. The rest of the crew aren't much better:

28043109580_067df78b75_z.jpg

but I did spend some time cleaning up the very realistic (irony) gun mounts. Have you noticed as well that they're all wearing USAAF issue onesies? Enough, I think. And no, I won't be bothering to fill the ejector marks - what would I use as a model for the 'correct' shape?

I've also dry fitted the internals in another game of 'hide the ejector marks':

28246763481_1766c9e540_z.jpg

Nice fit. Except the 'opening nose wheel doors' require a mechanism that isn't, I think, close to the original?

28291087596_1bed6c7897_z.jpg

There's a mass of other interior detail (not) and a detailed panel:

28246790121_b6116cffa7_n.jpg 27709262633_cd56fd31ab_n.jpg

also not. Although I have a cunning plan for this that cannot will probably fail.

The instructions say the cockpit internals should be H81 - Pale Yellow. Is that right? It may just get blasted with IG like the rest.

The Airfix kit provides you with Consolidated A-6 type nose & tail turrets. The nosewheel doors would have retracted inside the fuselage, so you could probably just leave them off and not worry about them. Check photos, though - if the a/c originally was manufactured with the Emerson nose turret, the nosewheel doors would open outward, even if the Emerson turret was replaced (repaired) in the field with a Consolidated turret at a later date.

Oh , hello Ced. For the crew: Not micromesh for the first time. It's Airfix 60th. Grit with 400 to 800! Cut the monster rings for the moveable MG's and putty the marks and the rest. Build the rings again finer. There is so much to come. Paint interieur is FS chromate green or yellow (H 81??? No!) No cockpit panel printed on the instruction again or eventually on the decal sheet? Cheers

P.s.: Now I'm off here for the summernight flew market on the promenade. Going to get some little gems or not!? Till tomorrow.

Edit: These are the guys you have to reproduce: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/18/RAF_Bungay_-_446th_Bombardment_Group_-_B-24_crew_44-40268.jpg

for that one: http://warbird-central.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/44-40268.jpg

And the interieur colour: H-81 or not: http://www.primeportal.net/hangar/bill_spidle/b-24j_44-44175/

My idea: FS chromate green with H-81 washing, That would suits it fine.

Looks like your getting stuck in Ced, really like the b-24 but don't have one in the stash and have always been afraid of the airfix version due to accuracy issues and my fear or rivets😬

Nice work and looking forward to what you do with it!
