Tamiya 1/35 PzKpfw II AusF F/G on the bench

Recommended Posts

As iffy health is inflicting extra spare time on my hands and I'm looking for a not too demanding build, I've pulled this oldie from the (very recent) stash.

36542367554_82cf1e8292_c.jpg

Some shots of the runners (You'll notice some bits already missing)

36996747640_a273d3ea8a_c.jpg

37205064096_573794edd5_c.jpg

Included figures

37205063826_1feb5b7f81_c.jpg

36996747170_80a4c2bfb1_c.jpg

Bendy vinyl stuff (I may choose to use them if I can't get the bronco individual links)

36542367184_7b0ee29004_c.jpg

Decals look plenty good enough.

37205063606_fd7cffb985_c.jpg

Progress so far includes cleanup and assembly of road wheels, sprockets and idlers complete with poly caps, adding drive sprocket spindles to chassis tub along with rear bulkhead and forward hooks.

Also hollowed out the exhaust pipe for that vaguely realistic pipe effect.

36582517733_97085a0805_c.jpg

Plenty of mould lines to clean up and simplified detail which is fine by me :) All adds to the therapeutic effect and I get to choose how far I want to go with it.

Thanks for looking

Hi Phil. I will follow your build with interest.

I built one of these for the Achtung Panzer GB a while back - it was my first go at building a tank in 1/35. It's a very good kit for it's age and I thoroughly enjoyed making it. If it's any use you can see my WIP here.

Good luck!

Kind regards,

Stix

A little more progress

Turret together and shooty stuff added :)

Filled underside seams on the turret with Mr. Dissolved Putty

36996747030_06da3bec99_c.jpg

Drilled out the gun barrels

36582517523_bf3099dfb9_c.jpg

Added Hull components to the upper hull leaving off those that will be painted separately

37205063416_d39d14f78f_c.jpg

36542366654_ff9b612ee3_c.jpg

Didn't like the Notek light as supplied in the kit so as I have a spare from the Opel Blitz build I'll use that one instead

36542366414_bac1c69fce_c.jpg

Thanks for looking and thanks for the comments.

I took a peek at your WIP Stix. Very nice build indeed. I've pinched the tip about filling the underside holes

Cheers

That is certainly a golden oldie, I built the one when i was about17 years old if I remember correctly making that 43 years ago. Was one of the first Tamiya models to appear in Dutch model shops.

Lucky you to have one in the stash

Filler in turret seams sanded smooth and replacement Notek light fitted to upper hull.

36996746860_ee9ccd7a7b_c.jpg

Drilled out the headlamps and shaped the reflector housing using a spherical abrasive dremel attachment

36542366294_ee9499c37a_c.jpg

Used thick foil from a snack tub seal and the rounded conical end of a paint brush handle to form the reflectors in the lights.

36542366174_2ed1f26d15_c.jpg

Punched out clear plastic disks from appropriately shaped small tablet blister pack to produce slightly convex light lenses.

Thanks for looking.

Comments and suggestions always welcome :thumbsup2:

I like how you have done the lights, very innovative.

I've got two of these in my stash, will more than likely to be my next build after I finish the ISU152 and its associated diorama. I am going to "borrow" your idea for the lights when I build mine up.

Looking at the grilles over the engine bay and radiator I felt they may end up showing a whole lot of nothing underneath.

37205063206_b454d34da3_c.jpg

Most would paint it all black inside but I wanted something to be seen so, out with the bits and bobs, assorted plastic tubes and obligatory yogurt pot and cobbled this together.

36542365964_93c7b95519_c.jpg

Not sure if the radiator fan will be seen but it'll be there anyway

36996746680_8299e32df0_c.jpg

Some of the items used in there

36542365754_2aee4fc94b_c.jpg

Adding the exhaust I nearly forgot

37205063016_4ec0abbb68_c.jpg

A nice undercoat of XF-63 German Grey

36582516713_eae181dd20_c.jpg

Detail painting to come, It doesn't need to look exact as not much will be seen through the grilles but it should give a good impression of what would have been there.

Thanks for looking

Painted up engine bay for mostly concealed viewing and put radiator fan in place.

37205058556_388bb44b40_c.jpg

36996746570_f43d1ac86a_c.jpg

And how much of this will be seen? Well...

36996746500_41e252c509_c.jpg

..not very much :) but enough to suggest the engine and exhaust etc..

Blanked off the see through underside of the upper hull using, you guessed it, strips of yoghurt pot :D

37205058436_79e4b36db5_c.jpg

37205058216_4d2f61843e_c.jpg

I'll let that dry and then apply filler and blend it all in.

Thanks for looking

I decided to try a bit of pre-shading this time.

Thinned Tamiya XF-85 Rubber Black applied strategically to Hull upper/lower, turret...

37205062506_f1fa08fc07_c.jpg

...and wheels

37205062326_1a503401e7_c.jpg

A light application of thinned Tamiya XF-60 Dark Yellow and XF-57 buff lightened with a little XF-2 White concentrating in the middle of the areas I wanted to be lighter.

37205058076_4a8c7282c5_c.jpg

and applied to the wheels.

36996746340_3628c75ac7_c.jpg

Overall top coat of the same dark yellow mix to tone everything down.

I like to keep pre-shading very subtle so it just gives a slight tonal variation to what would otherwise be a solid, bland colour.

37205057936_0b1f8f6986_c.jpg

I may yet go over it again if I feel the pre-shade is still too prominent.

Thanks again for looking.

Tea's finished and time for bed methinks

These really must be amongst the ultimate simple value for money kits( even without the soldiers !) ( Revell Fokker Triplanes at any scale pretty good too but despite not too much rigging it's a bi/Triplane :-( - anyone suggest another budget superstar ?

I'm astonished by the engine and think the work deserves thinner grills ... Any plans ? Keep it up and get well soon.

Thanks for all the comments.

Ytareh: I don't have any plans to thin the engine grilles, it would be too difficult for me to keep them even and correctly spaced. I did ask in Para... oops, my local model shop, if they had any photoetch on sale for it but there was nothing and I don't really want to spend the earth on aftermarket

John: Thanks for the kind words. It's a little scary and you may be correct about something dire happening if I stop modelling :D

Just a little update today. I wasn't happy with the shade of desert yellow and the preshade was too prominent so I lightened up the mix with more XF-2 White and went over it all again.

37205062016_590eb68dcd_c.jpg

Don't know how much of the difference is visible in the pictures but in reality it looks a lot better.

Painted up the road wheel tyres with thinned XF-85 Rubber Black

36582515863_1c0b6fe14d_c.jpg

That's it for tonight on this build, hope to have more for you tomorrow.

Thanks for looking

The Eduard PE set (35350) sells for more than what you can buy the kit for. And from memory the other set Eduard made (35047) has been discontinued. I bought two sets (35350) for mine years ago from a hobby store that was closing down, if I recall correctly the guy let me have both sets for $5 each.

Fraser Gray wrote a really good build article for this little machine in FineScale Modeler December 2001 issue. Worth a look if you can find that issue.

Small update:

A coat of Tamiya TS-13 clear to seal the paint and the decals are on.

The eagle eyed amongst you might have spotted that I've had a bash at thinning the engine grilles too.

More to come tomorrow (with a bit of luck)

I suppose this is technically tomorrow now. I may have got a little engrossed in painting up the tools and adding the remaining bits and pieces to the hull.

Metal effects produced by painting with German Grey and then drybrushing with Vallejo Steel.

Wood effects created by painting Tamiya Desert Yellow and then almost dry streaks of thinned Burnt Umber oil paint.

I now desperately need to go to bed as I need to be up in 5.5 hrs :poo:

Night all, thanks for looking
