Max Headroom
See here http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-36763212 So 9 Poseidons to be based in Lossimouth and 50 new Apaches. Leonardo will be disappointed I assume with the Apaches being built in the US? I wonder when the first deliveries will be? Trevor

Duncan B
Lossiemouth is going to be bursting at the seems! I can feel a U turn on Leuchars coming along with the 2 new ADF Typhoon squadrons, all the hardware is in place after all. Duncan B

Mr T
I think the two ADF units will end up at Leeming, which has the infrastructure and the space and is well placed between Lossie and Coninsgby. A Scottish airfield makes sense to support covering SSBN sorties and operations over the UK-Iceland-Greenland Gap
Paul J
Well, at least we will have an MPA after the gap over the past few years .... no matter where they are based.

Duncan B Not a problem, With Tornado out of service by 2018 -2020, the OCU at Lossie could be disbanded and conversion training undertaken at Marham, freeing up space for the MPA fleet. Paul Bradley
It would have seemed to make sense to have some based in the north and some in the south, but given the pitifully small number being purchased, I foresee some very long transit times which will up flying hours without adding more sorties. The article states that their primary task will be to protect Trident and its successor, so I'd bet on a Scottish base for now until that future cannoworms is sorted, but for long range sorties over the SW approaches, that'll add at least two hours to transit back and forth compared to aircraft based in Cornwall. Dave Fleming
But that was the case with the Nimrods as well latterly
Duncan B
I'd be perfectly happy for the MPA fleet to support Trident from Cornwall without the transit time. Duncan B

Duncan B
Errrrr I don't think it is.... Surely most went to Lossie? I meant the runways, hangers control tower and HAS's not the nuts, bolts, spanners (Spanners that swing the spacers) and houchins. They've all been kept at operational standard so wouldn't be a big issue to reactive unlike Greenham Common for instance where there is no runway etc. Duncan B
Dave Fleming
What squadron will they be allocated to? Trevor At a guess either 120 or 201 (possibly both, if they decide to do a large level of manning like they did when the Sentry Fleet was at peak with 8 and 23, but if not I'd expect at least one of those to be OEU or OCU, with 42 as a third option)
Agent K
I meant the runways, hangers control tower and HAS's not the nuts, bolts, spanners (Spanners that swing the spacers) and houchins. They've all been kept at operational standard so wouldn't be a big issue to reactive unlike Greenham Common for instance where there is no runway etc. Duncan B But Leeming has all that too (HangArs etc.) and additionally is a current RAF base operating fast jets, with those hangars and HAS's etc. in fairly frequent use, hence I suspect would be far more ready to accept the jets. Time will tell, but I suspect Leeming is more ready to accept the jets and better placed geographically when considering Lossie, Leeming and Coningsby together. However, time will tell....... Dave Fleming
I don't see them having any more than two MOBs for Typhoon, due to all the support infrastructure and manning required. There may be a shuffing around of squadrons/airframes to bring the two AD dedicated squadrons on line, but I expect them to be at Lossie or Conninsby. Basing the P-8s at Lossie seems strange, it will be very crowded there. Reactivating Kinloss might make more sense.
Truro Model Builder
Either way MPA crews will no doubt be looking forward to being exiled to Morayshire again. Particularly those who have been involved with Seedcorn in sunnier climes.

Not to the bean counters.... no base will be reactivated by this process, or have significant work undertaken when not necessary which would count out reactivation of Kinloss or Leuchars (and moving the army back out to be housed where?) so It will either be the 2 bases or Leeming will be included.
