Vokes filter on Hurricanes

Hello all,

I'm currently researching the Vokes filter for my Hurricane IIC build.

None of the plans seem to fit the filters I see on the period photographs. Also it would appear to have slight differences between the filters. Maybe some were field replacements and others factory-installed?

I have also seen the words 'Aerovee' or 'Aero-Vee' associated with 'Vokes'. What are they? Brand name, variants?

I'm counting on you Hurricane fans to shed a light on that matter.

Aerovee is normally associated with the later smaller tropical filter that became standard on 2-stage Merlin Spitfires, and Mosquitos. I suggest that this is a convenient habit best retained, but don't know whether it is strictly correct.

How good the plans are is a perennial question and i wouldn't waste too much time on that. I've not noticed any difference between the filters on Mk.IIs but they did have a long production run so some changes could have been introduced. Any field replacements will have come from the same factory as the one on the aircraft assembly lines.

There is a difference between the filter on the Mk.I and the Mk.II, so make sure the odd Mk.I hasn't crept into your collection of Mk.IIs.

A more serious matter is the Vokes filter. It would appear that there were several types of Vokes filter used on the Hurricanes but none I found in my references is as shallow as the one supplied in the kit.

The new MK.I (Trop) depicts the correct filter on its box art. Hopefully FLY will provide a new, correct filter this time.

as Graham mentions, the Mk I has a different filter, a bit shorter.

these are some of the very few Hurricane plans I'd have any faith in, Peter Cooke's from his Hurricane Veracity article.

though the Fly filter looks like it just needs a saw cut, bending down and a wedge to correct it.

The Vokes Aerovee (also spelled as Aero-Vee) is a compact dry-type air filter widely used by RAF aircraft in the late stage of the war.
