  • 3 weeks later...

There was no updates here some time. But build was going anyway.

So some brief report about activities of last two weeks:

Started painting.

The first attempt was completely unsuccessful. At first step I cover all plane by alclad aluminium. After that paint upper surface with GS C329 Yellow.

As a result ugly greenish color:

Several attempts to save the day with small losses failed.

Therefore, all the paint was washed away:

Model was primed by GS Mr. Base White:

And after that painted in a ordinary way:

1. Upper suface - GS GS C329 Yellow

2. Masks on upper surface

3. Lower surface - АК Xtreme Metal Aluminium

Results is much more satisfactory:

After coat of gloss varnish painted through masks black stripes on top surface:

And apply decals:

Hi Sasha

You know my friend, one of the most enjoyable parts of following along your build of this really cool aircraft, is getting to know you a little bit more as time passes. I am in awe of your patience! Most of us would have angrily thrown the %*&# kit back in the box, never to be seen again, after the frustration of the failed paint episode! But you set a great example, took a deep breath, and jumped right back in to the project. I learn something each and every time I read your words. I’m sure those of us that are following you would agree that you give us hope that we, too, can succeed even when we hit those bumps in the road

Thank you my friend, for your encouragement. Keep up the great work!

Thom, Martin, Pete - thank you mates!

Thom, I'm very touched by your words. I would be very happy if my experience will be useful.

Finishing touches: semi-gloss varnish, masks removed.

So it's almost done:

Only few things left:

- little more weathering

- rear landing gear

- antenas

- lower hatch cover

Brilliant work, Sasha!

I saw the restored aircraft a few months ago, at the Frontiers of Flight Museum in Dallas, TX. It has been lovingly restored and is kind of carefully guarded, as museum exhibits go. As big as that plane looks on the ground, it only had 160 horsepower ( 2 engines, 80 HP each).

Do you plan to build a XF5U as a companion?

You should email some photos to the people at the Museum; i am sure they would love it!

Kind regards,

I'm in touch with gents from Vought Heritage/Vought Retirees Club - mr. Richard Guthrie and mr. Roger Stites. They shared some very helpful photos of restoration process. And I was promised to send them photos of builded model (already done).

So the final photos:

Just a Superbly-Executed, Well-Rendered model all round.

I've met both of those fellas you mentioned, and they're very nice people. It's a great museum, especially if you like Vought subject matter like i do.

Bring on the F5U!!

Dears,

My "greate gratitude" to photobucket, who killed many WIP threads (including this one) here and at other modelling resources.

RFI thread for V-173 already fixed, but unfortunatly I have no time/courage to fix all links at this thread. Sorry (

Anyway, all pictures alive at my PC. So if you need some of them just ping me.

Also I hope they still reachable here - http://s32.photobucket.com/user/aecheburator/library/WIP/Vought V-173?sort=3&page=1
