Night Witches...1/48 Polikarpov Po-2 "Kukuruznik"

Recommended Posts

#19/2016

After two German cover versions, here´s finally the original Russian one.
The infamous "Nähmaschine" as the Landsers called them, like my dad´s father who served as a supply driver in the Luftwaffe on the Eastern Front and experienced the Night Witches first hand.

ICM kit without any aftermarket stuff, elastic thread for the rigging, Gunze and Tamiya acrylics for painting.

The model shows an a/c of the 46th "Taman" Guards Night Bomber Aviation Regiment late in the war.

Lovely model of the Polikarpov. Your Dad has quite a production line going!

I always enjoy watching the Shuttleworth Collection's example take to the sky. It has a very unusual engine note and seems very slow in comparison to some of its European contemporaries.

The Po-2 always looked like a fun plane to fly.

Okay, maybe not in combat or under trees but just stooging around would be fun. :pilot:

You have done an excellent job bringing out the character of this clunky little bird.

Really something special. Like this Type very much and always want to build it. So I have to buy one.

Very good job, especially on the rigging part.

Andy

Yes, the rigging amount is almost as horrible as with WW1 British aircraft :spider:

But nevertheless hands down on this kit. My dad initially started the AZ Model/Gavia kit but it´s not an easy kit, therefore he turned soon to the ICM kit.

The kit, like most new(er) ICM kits is very good, only the plastic could partly be a bit harder. When doing the wing-strut attachment you gotta take care that the plastic glue doesn´t melt away too much of the strut ends. The good thing with the struts is that they come in "N" form, so you don´t have to fiddle around with single struts.

pleased that the model pleases

Well, it wood look better with turnbuckles but my dad isn´t one of those specialists, and with darker rigging. My dad usually paints it dark grey or metallic when he uses this kind of thread but this time he didn´t want to endanger the finished model, in the end you can hardly grab it without tearing something off :)

:goodjob: Got the AZ/Gavia version in my stash. It does look like a nicely produced kit ..... Interesting to know what problems your dad had with it ?

He didn´t really have problems with the kit but it´s engineering is more complex than the ICM kit and it includes a bunch of PE parts, which aren´t provided as plastic alternative and my dad is no friend of PE and superglue. They are often a source of frustration for my dad

I would say the AZ/Gavia kit is more for experienced and top modellers. The ICM kit is more modeller friendly, easier to build and better suited for beginners and average skill.
