Revell Ju88 A-4 (Greece) 1/72

Recommended Posts

Hi folks - finally joining my first group build

I'm a big fan of all things Luftwaffe so thought this would be as good a chance as any to make a start in a group build. I've had this kit in my stash for a while now and have been looking for the perfect opportunity to start so here I go.

As much as I love the scheme on the box art, I've decided to go for something a bit different and have gone for the following scheme:20160616_004820_LLS_zpsu1v6fi2p.jpg

I thought this scheme would make a nice change as I've only ever completed Luftwaffe aircraft in the usual RLM 70/71 splinter camo so this will keep things interesting.

The kit is excellent - well detailed for the scale and I've decided to build OOB. I've made a start on the items for the cockpit which even at this early stage nicely replicate the typically cramped and busy office of a Ju88.

I'll make some tape seat belts to add to the realism but other than that I'll be using only the kit parts. Got a few more stages to go and then I'll be able to get the cockpit painted up and detailed.

Congratulations on entering your first G/B . This Revell kit seems to have set the gold standard in 1/72 88's and its looking like the Luftwaffe units will be well equipped with them by August this year .

You're absolutely right Alistair - the revell kit is a cracker and thanks for your warm welcome to the group build.

By the end of August we'll probably have full squadrons of this kit which is no bad thing :D

Welcome,

I am one of the many going after this kit, it's Sicily for me though! It is a fine kit.... However so far I have only done the masking!

Looking forward to your approach

Thanks for your welcome Rob - the Sicily scheme was definitely swaying me - even her indoors wanted me to do that scheme but I thought I'd go for the Greece scheme as I haven't completed an aircraft in those colours before - maybe I should do as I'm told by the boss!!!!! :fight:

I'll keep an eye out for progress with your 88 too.

Hi Kris, Nice to see another Revell 88. :welcome:

I am building mine in the same colour scheme as yours. I am curious how it will turn out.

Cheers,

Thanks for your post Arnold.

It'll be great to see our kits as they progress together and see if we can do them justice - looking forward to seeing your interpretation of the scheme.

Please don't make yours too awesome and show me up though :crying:

Many thanks

There will be seven build of this kit in the GB in two different versions.

So don't worry to much how yours will come out to the rest. I think it will be fine. :D

Cheers,

Hi Kris,

Welcome to the lot of Revell 1/72 Ju 88 builders :) I'm one of them as well, but as I can't build a kit simply OOB, I'm throwing Eduard's BIGED set and Quickboost's resin exhausts at it :banghead:

Looking forward to your progress. You made a good looking cockpit so far :goodjob:

Cheers

Hi Kris,

If you want to try using PE, I'd suggest you build a kit with good fit, like a Tamiya, so you can concentrate on the PE challenge, and use a small PE fret, like an Eduard's zoom set.

Yes Kris, I built recently Tamiya's 1/72 Messerschmitt Bf 109 E4 as Helmut Wick's aircraft during the BoB. The fit is very good and the kit comes with decals for three nice camouflage schemes. You can see my WIP and RFI through the link below in my signature.

The pre-painted PE set I used seems to be discontinued (Eduard's ref. 73199) but there's a Zoom set for Bf 109Es which seems very much like the one I used, though not pre-painted (Eduard's ref. SS164). Pre-painted sets can be a mixed blessing, as the colours of many interior parts in the fret seldom coincide with the paints I have and must be repainted. The main advantage is the pre-painting of the instrument panels. So, you shouldn't be put off if you use a non pre-painted PE set, just be careful to paint white the instrument panel plastic piece where the instruments film, that comes with the PE fret, will be applied. In this way, all the dials will be properly white. Hopefully this will be clearer if you take a look at page 2 of the PE fret instruction sheet that is available in Eduard's site.

Cheers

Thanks very much for all your help and advice Jaime - it's really appreciated. I'll hopefully give that kit a go and then be able to get the details posted onto the forum and start getting to grips with PE and extra detailing.

Now then - where has SHMBO put my wallet!!!! :hmmm:

  • 2 weeks later...

Right folks, I'm finally back again with an update. I've made a fair bit of progress since my last post while I was waiting to get a camera sorted. The camera is now ticked off my list and these latest update photos have been taken with it - hope they're ok.

I've managed to get all the cockpit finished and a fair bit of the general construction as you can see below:

So that's where I'm at. There's a bit more construction to do and then a small amount of filling and titivating to do and then she'll be about ready for some priming and pre-shading :D
