1/72 ACE Soviet Aerosan NKL-16/41

Recommended Posts

Sargent Squarehead (Andy) was kind in sending me this kit as a gift as he wanted to see what I made of it and for me to join this Group Build:

P1130271_zpsj9fakvn4.jpg

The kit is of Ukrainian manufacture and uses short run technology. There are four grey sprues, a tiny bit of PE and a very tiny decal sheet:

P1130272_zpsenjubpns.jpg

You get an idea of the moulding standard from the engine:

P1130273_zpsw4p1qzy3.jpg

Andy has suggested that I look into a resin replacement for that and I certainly will.

The instructions explain things well enough I think but note that although there are numbered parts here there are no numbers on the actual parts:

P1130274_zpsyrtl5mlc.jpg

P1130275_zpsovyafjhc.jpg

I started by removing some of the main parts from the sprues. One of the first things I will be doing is replacing the ski outriggers with some brass rod and tube I think:

It's a tiny thing isn't it?

Bye for now,

Nigel

Once the kit arrived with me and I got to have a proper look at the parts I wasn't entirely sure if I was gifting it to you or inflicting it on you.....Hence the comments in my PM.

FWIW - If you like a new subject by ACE always buy it ASAP, the moulds are pretty good when they are new or after a refurb, but they seem to deteriorate really fast.....Whether this is true of their newer 'high quality' tooling remains to be seen. :nerd:

I've got the ACE 1/72 NKL-26 on the shelves so, depending on zveroboi progress, I may join you in an Aerosani a little later on.....After my experiences with my autogyro, I've come to the conclusion that I really do need to learn about this business of rebuilding struts with metal.

I can see you are a man of impeccable taste Nigel ;)

Cliff

Oddly I was blagging Nigel into this at exactly the same time you were posting your Extratech build.....The other kit available at the time was the ACE version of the RF-8, so it all worked out rather well. :D

Yummo. Love the flash, er... I've seen reviews of 1/35 Trumpy(?) versions, really caught my eye then and I will be following this with great interest. Regarding the size - don't sneeze!

Munch, munch, munch,

Alex.

One I actually *haven't* got in the stash, but find fascinating. I hope you are going for white distemper winter camouflage? It looks so cool on the box :cold:

Superb choice

I started today by removing the ski outriggers from the floor section. They measured out at about 1mm in diameter:

P1130278_zpsgz6iwgnl.jpg

Based on reference photos I have found, that looks a little over scale so instead I when for 0.8mm brass rod. The grooves for them were cut with a saw and then finished off with a fine round file:

P1130279_zps1bxlnjyy.jpg

I think these moulded in steering links would look better as a fabricated part standing away from the body so I recorded their dimensions before removing:

P1130280_zpsj5qndg7s.jpg

I also removed the door handle and replaced it with some 0.45mm rod:

P1130281_zpsdrjh8dvv.jpg

Next I added the seats and glued in the outriggers with extra thin CA:

P1130282_zpssscxka8w.jpg

The only remaining interior parts are the facia and steering column + wheel. Here they are before clean up to give you an idea of what I'm up against:

P1130283_zpsb2hfgxdq.jpg

I'm not using the moulded column, instead going for some finer 0.6mm plastic rod. I also deepened the mounting hole in the wheel:

P1130284_zps8zrffwlg.jpg

Then I could build half the body including the facia and assemble the steering column:

P1130285_zps9pes5gbg.jpg

Next I cleaned up the remaining parts of the body and taped it all together so see what was visible inside:

P1130286_zpskgf5vcaa.jpg

A bit more than I was expecting TBH.

In preparation for some paint I taped up all the joint lines with 1mm masking tape:

P1130287_zpsoiqbuhhl.jpg

The PE is for this other side door plus its handle. I'll make another wire handle for this so I drilled a 0.4mm hole in the door for it:

P1130288_zpszzajosl1.jpg

Here's that done:

P1130289_zpsfluqmwpj.jpg

Now all the interior parts were ready for some paint. I have no idea what the interior colour should be other than its darker than white so I'm using this grey / green with the black for the steering column:

P1130290_zpssooesjm8.jpg

I didn't bother with primer as visibility in there is quite restricted:

P1130291_zpsv47tr2xe.jpg

Then I realised there was this spade to go on the side. I removed the mounting features and replaced the handle with 0.5mm rod:

P1130292_zpsio38fknd.jpg

This was my alternative mounting arrangement:

P1130293_zpshx8lb4sl.jpg

Of course that damaged the recently applied paint inside, its not really visible but I retouched anyway.

Next I masked up the interior and applied some white Alclad primer round the window cut outs:

P1130294_zpsvkedaz1i.jpg

Then I removed all the masking ready to start on the glazing:

P1130295_zps4ihbfm3g.jpg

The instructions provide templates for the glazing but I took my own measurements and the templates are seriously undersize:

P1130296_zpsixtewxtk.jpg

I used extra thin superglue on the side windows and got horrendous fogging problems:

P1130297_zpswb6t6rkp.jpg

It worked fine on my TB2 glazing, I've no idea why the problems here, climatic conditions maybe?

A coat of Klear helped but in the end I decided they weren't good enough and have now pushed them out:

P1130298_zpsh4depdg7.jpg

For the front screen I used five minute epoxy and got a much better result. I have also added a rectangle of black decal on top of the facia:

P1130299_zps1ezdlizk.jpg

I just have to re-sort the side windows and this can go together tomorrow. I've had no luck with a five cylinder radial of any description let alone a Russian one - any ideas welcome.

Bye for now,

Nigel

That engine is I believe an M-11, the same engine as used on the Po-2 (U-2) biplane. If you can find a replacement engine for a Po-2, then it should work on the Aerosan.

Jason

For the engine, maybe slice five pots off a radial from the spares box and rebuild the kit part.....I'll dig out my NKL-26 and see if the engine casting is any better, but I wouldn't hold out too many hopes on that front TBH.

EDIT - Just seen Jason's comment and as it happens I've got a redundant Po.2 in my stash (can't remember what brand. I recently bought the ICM kit, so I'd be happy to donate the older one to the cause.....I really will have to dig this one out, I have no idea where it is!

PS - It's an old kit mind you so the engine may not be much better than ACE's attempt.

PPS - I think it is this one: http://www.ipmsdeutschland.de/FirstLook/ASTER/Aster_Po-2/Modelfarb_Po-2.html

PPPS - There is always this: https://www.scalemates.com/kits/153184-pavla-models-e72-04-engine-shvetsov-m-11-for-po-2 Probably the way forward IMHO. :coolio:

OK, I had problems uploading my photos tonight so this is a late night update. I got the side windows installed with five minute epoxy and added the steering column. I also removed the paint from the outriggers with some solvent as well as painting the rest of the facia with matt black:

P1130301_zpspcz8kqch.jpg

Then the rest of the cabin could be assembled:

P1130302_zpsd5jep8gq.jpg

Filler was applied to the seams and the windows masked:

P1130303_zpsypl3qb5e.jpg

I then cleaned up all the skis including the fifth spare one to go on the roof as well as adding what I assume to be the fuel tank to the front end:

P1130304_zpsx0ky96hy.jpg

Next I fabricated the ski steering mechanism on the RHS:

P1130306_zpsdt49r7pz.jpg

I will detail how I did that tomorrow.

So it's bye from me for today,

Nigel

Just found this great site on these things. Has cutaway drawings and some interior shots (of course, now you have buttoned her up). Just use the translate option on your computer and you will get more info than you thought you really needed.
